FWIW long start batts fixed it

I come here alot for some great data, help, everything on my truck.

To add to the data base & experince list.

A few weeks ago my EGR went out and the shop told me my FICM was bad too. (For the record my delta wasn't out of line, 7-10F)

I decided to do the EGR etc. work myself.

Using Eds test proceedure the FICM tested good, so I skipped doing that (at the time had no long cranks)

After getting the EGR, Oil Cooler, STC (Which a PO must of changed also), ELC, Blue spring, Ended up polishing the unison ring etc.

I started having long crank issues. Right after it was back on the road.

Long starts, I was cycling the key 3-4 times then crank thinking it may help with cylinder heat (glow plugs). Crank time was 5-10 seconds often and 15% of the time I would need to retry 1-3 times.

Was fixing to retest FICM, and get the batts tested,

It sat for 1.5 days. Batterys were gone.

Replaced both batterys long starts fixed.

I know it is not new news but it does confirm existing threads/comments

Thanks

Yep these trucks are seriously power hungry. A good alt and two top notch batteries are a must. Also remember to clean your battery cables. The battery post clamps are two parts (two bands if you will) and the top one can look clean while the bottom one is corroded. Glad you got it fixed. If the FICM was bad it will eventually set a code.

I just replaced all of those things as well including have my FICM repaired and upgraded with Atlas 40 tune. I have chased gremlins since Saturday as I'm in a no start and I believe i have narrowed it down to I need two new batteries.

What brand of batteries did you get?

I was getting no codes**, no check engine.

**I have not checked for IIRC "soft codes" ones that can be found with a scan tool but don't turn on the check engine light.

I did some research on here and saw that for the buck/quality Costco($85ea) were the best, threads about this also stated Consumer Reports showed this too.

And CR stated Die Hard Platnium were the best product with a hefty price though.

Costco = 75 mi one way for me.

It was saturday afternoon. So.... Got two from Advance Auto. And $25 per battery discount by ordering on line with in store pick-up. Got them in 30mins at the local store. About $105 ea net before tax. (3yr/8yr, 850cca)
