I have 35's and put in 4.56's brought my rpm's up by 300 while crusing at 75mph. I live near the mountains and wanted better towing ability. It definitely brings the motor to its proper torque range. I strongly recommend it.

Are you guys swapping the gears yourself, or paying somebody to do it? How hard of a job is the swap. I'd love to get the 4:30 out of my dually.

MTBLUEFORD What are you running for RPMS at 75 with the 4.56's out of curiosity? My EGTs just keep climbing if I'm pulling anything or going up inclines unless I kick it down and cruise in 4th, then I'm staying at around 900 degrees. I'm hoping that the new gears will help with all that and allow we to cruise in 5th comfortably.
Dan K - I don't have the mechanical ability to swap them out myself. If I could I would in a second vs. pay some tech down the street 800 bucks to do it. Anyone in the Quantico VA area have any recommendations for installers? What type of gears should I look into???

KRAZYKABOOM i am running 2200 rpm. If you look at the torque curve for the 6.0 you will see thats where its power is. Also with rpm's your egt's will stay in check. The torqshift is a good tranny but its 5th gear i believe is a 1 to 1 ratio which it totally drops the truck out of its power curve.Although a chip will help there is no substitute for the rpm's you need, believe me i pull in the mountains all the time.I was having the same problem as your talking about.I PAID 1700.00 with gears here in montana i used yukon gears been in for 2 years now no problems.

5th gear in the TorqShift is 0.71 to 1.

2200 RPM at 75!! That's sound a heck of a lot better than 2000 at 60-65. It sounds like a set of 4.56 is the way to go. I have been quoted similar prices for the install in the Virginia area as well. What is everyone view on 4.88 gears. Is that a bit tall for my application? I don't want to slap on the 4.56 and then be dissappointed when I buy a boat (don't tell my wife) next year and it doesn't pull like it should. I suppose if you are running the 4.56 in Montana terrain, I should be satisfied.....thoughts?

I like 4.88 gears with 37" tires for how I use my truck. My toy hauler is approx 13,000 lbs and my destinations take me up steep grades and over mountain passes. Truck feels dialed...

I have a local commute (no freeway). When I am unloaded on the freeway, I hold 80 MPH at 2,600 RPM the entire trip. The 6.0 likes RPM.

You stated earlier that you do not tow much, if ever. But, you may get a boat? I recommend 4.56 gears with your 38" tire setup.

Thus far 4.56 has been the recommended gear set for my setup. I am by no means towing the weight you are, so IMO the 4.88 would be too tall and not allow me to cruise comfortably on the interstate. Thanks for the all your help...now it's on to pricing.

i have a question. i have a 2004 F 250 4wd PSD. i am looking to add some gear for towing reasons. i have stock tires and no lift or anything. what would be a good gear for me and do you have to change the front and rear or just the rear? the truck is used for towing 90% of the time.
