Getting trouble codes

My check engine light came on while the wife was driving the truck. Stinkin wife. I'm into the extended warranty, and want to see what the error codes are before I take it in and fork over the $100. Do I have to get a code reader to see the codes?

Whoa, hope your wife doesn't read this forum or you may be spending some quality time in the dog house.

A descent code reader is going to cost at least $100+. How is the truck running? Have you noticed any change in performance? If nothing has changed, it could be a false code. But even if you did get a code reader and found which code it throw, whould you be able to fix the truck? If the EGR valve crapped out for example, a new one will run about $300. Every try to change the ICP or CKP sensor on your engine? So a code reader and parts and labor (your time) may make that $100 deductible look pretty darn cheap.

What would you do/say if you were driving the truck when the check engine light came on?

Re: Getting trouble codes

She didn't notice when the light came on. "Oh, is that what that little picture thingie means?" The truck runs great. Still gets good mileage. It shouldn't be the EGR. I had the latest flash done that supposedly eliminates the EGR functionality. It's more of a curosity thing. I would like to know what the problem is before I take it to them. I plan on keeping the truck for a while, so I would want to have a code reader for use after the warranty expires. I'll see if the light goes out, and then comes back later. In the mean time, I'll keep my eyes open for a deal on a reader.

Re: Getting trouble codes

I don't think the latest flash got rid of the EGR. I know they eliminated the EBP with a flash and got the backpressure form other sensers.

Re: Getting trouble codes

My Check Engine Light used to go on regularly. And out after a couple of days. Never near a dealer. And it ran fine. Mileage was unchanged.

I bought a ScanGauge to read the code: P0299. Took it in to the dealer and they replaced the turbo. No more CEL's.

Re: Getting trouble codes

Picked up a code scanner today to check it out. EGR flow insufficient. The light went out, and it runs fine, so I will wait and see. It was funny, though, my oldest called me and said that his check engine light came on today. Had him come over and plugged it into his OBDII port and saw that he had a cylinder 6 misfire. We'll work on it tomorrow. It will also work on the wife's car, in case she has any picture thingies popping up.
