Grinding/Rumble when turning

I've noticed a new problem with my truck, when turning sharply AND applying a fair amount of power/acceleration I'm noticing a grinding or rumbling sound.

At first I thought the 4WD was enabled but this is different sensation than the jerking/kicking from the tires being unable to slip on a hard surface.

I've exercised the auto/lock hub on both wheels but there is no change.

It doesn't seem to happen all the time, but it is frequent. The 4WD is working, I used it a couple of nights ago.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a possible rear end problem. How many miles on the truck? If it is a limited slip or traction loc the gear oil needs a friction modifier for the clutch pack. Or it is a possibility that there is a problem with the clutch pack them selves. Or even a u-joint...... and the list goes on...

Hope this helps!

My 03 did that. It was the limited slip and was most noticable under load making a turn uphill. Dealer quoted $375 to fix. I would try some of the other suggestions offered. I let it go 85k and never fixed it. Just ease up on it

Thanks, I've got a 97 Expedition that has done it for almost 100k and it's never caused any problems. My F250 just hit 60k and it sounds identical. I don't think it's a u-joint, I've had that before and know the symptoms.

How do I determine what kind of rear-end I have on the truck?

my 06 F350 4x4 w/ 52k miles is also doing it, most noticeable when turning, starting up a hill, or towing, anything putting a slight load on it....my guess is that its in the rear, so I'm planning on doing a fluid swap and mag hytec or updated ford aluminum cover, because the factory cover is badly rusted, very common on these trucks....my dad's 08 has the finned factory aluminum cover, pretty nice piece....

I'm due for an oil change & fuel filter change so I'm going to have them look at the rear differential and have them do a fluid change to see if it makes any difference.

I took the truck into the shop today and have the rear differential serviced, so far it seems quieter, I'll see how it does over the next week or so. Hopefully this took care of it.
