I'm in the club now too. For the past 3 weeks or so, I've had longer cranks. Used to be 2 seconds or less. Now it's anywhere from 4-7 seconds of cranking. Hasn't failed to start yet, but I don't like that uneasy feeling as it cranks and cranks.

I haven't found any correlation with the engine temp.

me too

I'm in this boat as well. It has completely refused to start a couple times. I took it to the dealer and they told me oil pressure was fine. They replaced fuel pump and it didn't do it for a couple weeks. Its back to some long starts and I mean long like 45 secs or so. I need to find a dealer in Phoenix who can fix this.

I've been fighting this with my servicing dealership for over a year now. My truck has had the first STC repair(not the latest), 8 glow plugs, 2 batteries and a glow plug module. My cold starts are worse(very long crank times) the hotter the weather or the lower I am. The cooler it is the better it starts and the higher I am in elevation the better it starts.
In July it was warm warm here in the south and I thought several time that the batteries were going to be down before it fired. Went the mountains in northern NM, elevation of about 10K, and she fires right up. Get back to 350' and warm weather and back to long cranking. Last winter it started better without the block heater plugged in.?. 0F out side, no block heater, she fires right up. Runs a little run but it is 0 degrees. Plug in the block heater the next night, and long crank puut puut puut and fires. I've even gotten up early for work and jumped it from 2 other batteries(now 4 total) and made no difference. ICP jumps right up past 500 and on up quickly, but it doesn't fire. Sounds like/seems like one finally hits, then another, then some more. Kind of a puuut puuut puut puut put put putputput vrooom.

Gentlemen,
I just went through the process. It sounds like a leak in the hi press oil system. Where? who knows. As long as your dealer doesn't tell you the same BS as mine. First injector then screen out of IPR sucked back into HPOP destroying HPOP. Be careful with this one gentlemen because as was stated earlier there are many places the hi press system can leak from. As long as your truck is starting and running strong when cold don't buy into the HPOP, IPR or screen crap. It is a leak that is opening up as things warm and expand. Good luck.

Mine left me stranded tonight. Stopped at the gas station, wouldn't start, I cranked it for about 60 seconds, saw the TBC Fault no start. Let it sit about 2 hours and it started righted up, drove it home where it started fine again.

Any suggestions on how I can reproduce the problem so I can take it to the dealer?

HPOP system is losing pressure, possibly the STC, I had same issue, replaced STC with new design, no issues anymore.

I have an 05 F350 Crewcab 4X4 that starts hard when cold. When it starts it kind of chugs from real low rpm and then smooths out in about 10 seconds. It takes a good ten minutes for it to warm up and smooth out. After that it starts perfectly everytime. Any thoughts? I read the service bulletins and the posts but wasnt sure what everyone was experiencing.

high pressure oil leak at the hp pump fitting is the most common cause followed by injector to oil rail fitting oring. the other fittings dont seem to fail as often but ocassionaly the oil rail cracks at the back by the hp pump fitting. I work on fleet of 2000 powerstrokes in the coldest part of the world.

Mines back at a dealership. When I got it back it was still taking a longer time to crank. It actually got better for the last 9 months but about 3 weeks ago it started getting better fuel mileage and I knew it was to good to be true. It left me stranded twice befor I could get it to a dealer.

My 2005 F250 4x4 Auto 6.0L won't start after it sat for a month. I changed the fuel filters thinking I probably had a gel problem, no help. It cranks fine but won't even try to catch. This is my first diesel, I live in the montains and it will cost me a bundle to get it towed to a dealer. Anybody got any helpful ideas on what I can try? Thanks.

Mine is like that - except - it spins fast on cold start, partial firing - then after long crank fires up with a lot of black smoke - seems like a glo plaug issue?

What i have been seeing lately is a lot of ficms going in 05's and 06's.
it is pretty cold up here this time of year. they either come in for extended
crank times or no starts. With extended crank time im talking about approx
30-60 seconds to get to run. Only when cold. after warming up they usually
start great. Have them test the ficm per tsb. if below 47.5 volts the ficm
is junk.

On to every one else. If the vehicle starts fine cold and then has extended
crank time when hot, it more than likely has a hp oil leak. When the oil gets hot it thins out and leak becomes worse. In the 05-06 6.0's it most of the time is the stc fitting. ive seen other things also but the stc's are more common.
