I notice RatherBNtheWoods says his is altitude related...I wonder if he could have a bad barometric pressure sensor. Should be easy to check - there's a diagram that shows voltage per elevation in the 6.0L bible.
From whence cometh this 6.0 Bible? I'd like to get one - cause it looks like I might need it. The hard/long start problem is now gone - diagnosed a bad foot - mine - on the accelerator pedal - which flooded the engine. If I keep my right foot firmly on the brake - or use the remote start - no problem at all. Sheesh - is my face red.
my dad has a 05 f350 with 135k when he purchased it and first start is always hard since he got the truck. It is common to crank 20-30 seconds before it will fire off. then it white/blue smokes forever, and it does not matter outside temp, weather it is 30 or 70 degrees out side. now he left the truck set since thanksgiving and went to get in it the other day and it did not want to start when it did for almost 15 min you could not touch the accel. pedel or the the truck would die. once it was warm it behaved wild on the road push the pedel down and it looks like the truck is on fire from behind little to no boost then instantly mid 30s on boost and it cleans up. This whole sitiation has now repeated itself four times all in a row. It will start good when the motor is hot. looking for something to guide him to look at. I have never had an issue like that with my 7.3.
thanks BTW He has since changed both fuel filters and cleaned the afe filter with no change to the behavior. he also has a bully dog six gun system on it and all of this is with it turned off, it only gets worse as you turn the chip setting up.

I have a 2005 6.0 f350 4x4 drw. I turn the key on, wait for the glow plug light to go off and wait for the pump to stop under the drivers side of the truck, then it starts. It is still start slower than my friends. Batterys tested good and there are no codes. Any ideas. Thanks
See Ford Recall 05S34
I just started having pretty much the same problem; turns over fine but won't start in the mornings. I had saved several recall notices (05S34) from Ford that addressed this exact problem. I didn't take it to the dealer when I received them in the mail because the truck ran fine and I'm a firm beleiver in "If it aint broke, don't fix it". Now that I'm having the problem I dug them up and it has to do with the wiring harness that connects to the FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module). The harness rubs on the valve cover/manifold bolts and cause these intermittant problems when wires get cut and grounded out.
I called the dealer today and asked if they see the recall 05S34 in their system for my vin and they said no. so do I need to call the following?
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL UPGRADE THE FUEL INJECTION CONTROL MODULE (FICM) WIRE HARNESS OR REPLACED, AND/OR HAVE A NEW INJECTION CONTROL PRESSURE (ICP)) SENSOR CONNECTOR INSTALLED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 22, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.
Notes:
FORD RECALL NO. 05S34. CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.
Great forum - but I haven't found a solution to our problem yet
2005 F250. Failed to start in August, found code and they replaced ICP Sensor. Next week it left us stranded again - this time no code. This happened several times during the summer and upon having the truck towed -it would start just fine at the shop. No codes.
We though it was a hot weather issue until this week when stranded at 22 degrees. Again, no codes.
Called Ford and they advised there are no outstanding recalls on our VIN.
Don't think it's an O ring problem as we have no oil leaks whatsoever.

And you won't see an o ring leak either, they usually occur on the high pressure oil rail - you have to take the valve cover off to see it. Sounds like my truck till I had the o ring replaced.

Not saying this is anyone’s answer, I have been dealing with a 2005 6.0 for several months, vehicle was bought several months prior with a hard start issue always a concern. Truck has 104.000 miles. Has been hard starting fresh taking 15-20 seconds, (engine cold). With engine warmed up truck would take longer (20-40 seconds) to start if restated shortly after hot run. Finally the truck would not start at all when trying to restart when engine was warmed up. Let stand until engine was cold, truck would start. We had done several repairs, IPR. Low pressure pump. STC fitting. The FICM Module ( Due to long extended cranking after running the batteries down) Finally was able to find a fitting that allowed us pressurized the high pressure system, and found the O-ring for the block off pipe, that is used to block off the port in the W-Manifold when the oil stand feed pipe is not used. (Same manifold is used on either side which means there are two oil feed ports, when only one is needed), It real is upsetting how a .35 cent o-ring can cause so much major grief, way to go American engineering
The W-Manifold, feeds the hi pressure oil to the injectors. As soon as you pull the valve cover off. it is the next item that would need to be removed to get to the injectors,
Suppose a new thread is not needed so I am joining the group here on the long start issue. It seems that my problem is getting worse now, and I can not even rely on the truck to start after I have run it.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
The truck starts up in the morning no problem, no power loss to speak of, but after its up to temp and I turn it off to run in the store or what not, the truck will crank longer than normal and sometimes will not start at all. If I let the truck sit for an hour or so, it will fire up again.
I suppose this fix is not something I want to get into myself...
Experience and price to repair would be appreciated
Had the same problem , was the high pressure oil pump. Got it back in a day . was covered under warranty -100$

My hard to start condition (only when cold), was resolved after 4 new injectors, new egr, new turbo & pcm update. I'm thinking the 4 new injectors and pcm update had the most to do with resolving my hard start condition. Good luck!
