Head gasket question

Just saw the latest diesel Power mag today. Article about ARP studs install. Article says clean head gaskets and re-use. Is this right? I always thought once torqued, that was it, especially after running engine.

Re: Head gasket question

I have heard of this before but you need new ones if they are blown.

Re: Head gasket question

That is like rebuilding a motor and just cleaning the bearings instead of replacing them.

If you are that far just replace them. Its not that much more money. The writers of that magazine article are not going to help you take your engine apart when your head gasket goes again.

Re: Head gasket question

As a side question ..... As time goes by, the cylinders and area around the head gasket build with carbon and the head gasket seats to the block..... If a motor was older, with more miles, would it stand up better to an aftermarket chip as far as head gaskets go? I'm just heading towards the end of the warranty and I have the "Chip Itch". Thanks and I hope all have a GREAT weekend.
