Folks,
I've been away from this site for a while, but I had an experience yesterday and am curious if others have experienced this issue.
In December 2007 my head gaskets were replaced under warranty. I provided head studs that were installed at that time.
Now in December 2008 and just 4,000 miles later, it seems I need head gaskets again.
Here's the glitch. The dealership is advising me that Ford has refused to replace the gaskets under warranty because HEAD STUDS were installed in December 2007, instead of factory Ford head BOLTS.
Have any of you been denied this type repair for this specific reason?

Tell them to prove, without a doubt and that would hold up in court, that the ARP studs caused headgasket failure. The headbolt design (stretching) is a known issue, hence the updated torque sequence and values in TSB# 08-11-03. There is a known issue with the cylinder head gaskets (TSB# 08-11-03. Do you tow or load it up? Mods? I can't see head gaskets failing with studs after 4,000 miles unless the truck wasnt diagnosed properly before or now. It's possible the cylidner head flatness wasn't checked correctly previously or that it's being diagnosed incorrectly right now.

The studs were installed.
I also wonder if there was a head tolerance issue not addressed during the gasket replacement last year.
I have towed a 5,000 pound load twice in the past 12 months. I can't remember planting my throttle foot to the floor, AT ALL, during the past 12 months.
My situation is still in the "evaluation" stage. I stopped by the dealership yesterday and described how my degas cap whistles annoyingly, but only while the engine is cold. As it warms to near operating temperature, the whistling stops. (I experienced this same thing prior to the head gaskets being replaced in 2007. When the gaskets were replaced, whistling stopped.)
Here's what I was told this morning by the dealership. Ford will have the dealership perform the following 4-steps evaluation. a. Inspect the degas bottle cap to be operating at proper PSI. Warranty will replace if necessary! b. Check for a leaking EGR cooler. Warranty will replace if necessary. c. If the EGR cooler has not failed, then check the oil cooler for failure. If the oil cooler has failed, warranty will pay for replacement. d. If a, b, and c are not the problem, then head gasket failure is likely. If the engine is torn down and the gasket/s are the problem, Ford will refuse to warrant the gasket replacement job account the head studs having been installed prior.
I find this to be another Ford side-step, as I'm fully aware of the factory bolt stretch issue, vs the known higher tensile strength properties of an ARP head stud.
My truck does not go into the shop for inspection and repair until Dec. 22nd. I'll post the results here.

Be prepared for worse, but hope for the best. Maybe h.g. are ok/maybe not? You'll probably get replies/speculation etc. on your problems. Meantime, update later with facts. Good luck!
Angrywasp is on it. Most likely nothing can be done because ultimately it seems like Ford and the other brands do what they want when it comes to warranty. The only thing that may help is that the dealer messed up by not sending the heads out for machining (assuming that's what the problem is, and I'd about guarantee it is). According to the mechanics I've talked to, the heads are always warped, and if not planed, you will just blow the gaskets again regardless of whether or not studs are installed. Not sure if that will help with your dealer, but maybe worth a shot.

When I had my head gaskets done a couple months ago, I asked the dealership if I bought the head studs would they put them in. They told me no and that it will void my waranty if they do. So, I hope all works out with your ordeal.
Anytime you change any of the repair parts from the stock, Motorcraft supplied items you get into this area. Your asking the company to warranty something that was not under their control.
After saying that, the heads should have been machined flat. So I would check the repair order and history and make sure that was done. If not, then that is the most likely cause.

My tech said I had to come back to him so he could work with Ford if I had gasket probs again. But the short story is Ford is not responsible once you asked for non OEM stuff. Ford is not playing these days, they deny anything they can and have zero leniency... I did studs because I expected to go over 100K and knew the stock bolts would fail again. I bet your heads were warped and they did not do a proper repair.

head gaskets on 6.0s dont leak externally they leak compression into the cooling system under a very heavy load when the cylinder compression is high. what you see leaking between the block and head is probly just the egr cooler to oil coooler hose it just runs down the back.
compression test is out of the question it would have to be done wot full boost driving down the road.

I canceled the Dec. 22nd shop work for my truck. Several days before the scheduled visit I decided I had mis-diagnosed the problem. I hope that decision was the right one.
