i'll try to explain this as accurately as possible...
this only happens once the truck warms up, on acceleration, and de-acceleration- i hear a noise that sounds like a faint "flute" very distinct, not a piercing noise, but in the background. it happens constantly when under boost and letting off for up to five seconds. not a turbo charge whine, not turbo fart. the noise stays at a constant low pitch and tone. i've checked the exhaust, all clamps tight. this truck is all stock except banks exhaust. the truck drives fine and has normal boost.
can it be something w/the turbo charger. if so, what?
any help appreciated, it drives me nuts.

Holy Cow! I thought I was the only person with this problem. My truck is scheduled to go into the dealership tomorrow at 7am. I am already prepared to be dissapointed that they won't find anything.
Your description is identical to mine. Once thouroughly warmed up, the "flute" sound happens when I let off of the throttle, and is constant, although variable in tone, sometimes when I'm cruising down the highway.
I have checked all of the clamps on the turbo and intercooler lines with no help. Even changed the air filter to a new one. The noise is exremely annoying. I have also experienced it with the vents on and off, defroster on and off, windows up and down, etc. There is no correlation. I wonder if it is some type of vacuum line??
OK, too weird, my 2004 F250 just startted making the same noise as well, its sitting just over 55000KM, its definitely not the turbo hum that we're all used to, so I also wonder what it is. Mine is leaking coolant again, so its going back into the shop for that along with this new sound.........geez, wish I'd kept my 2002 7.3, not a prob with that truck in 2 years.

I'm only guessing its a problem as I have NEVER heard this noise before last week....in my experience, new noises and anything mechanical are usually the sign of some type of problem, or something out of the ordinary anyways.

That problem is not normal...............Mine has done it on three seperate occasions. Made the noise from day one but, I didn't get it fixed untill it had 27,000 miles on it. I believe it had something to do with an egr valve. Went out again at 30,000 to 40,000, I can't quite remember. It now has 54,000 miles on it..........sitting at the dealer right now as I type been there two days so far this week, two days last week. I think they are going to have to pull the cab and the motor to fix the ever-common oil leak that a lot of the 6.0L motors have had.
Well, I'd have to agree its not likely a normal sound, since mine only started making the sound last week. I'll mention EGR valve to the dealer, see what they say, dont think mine has been replaced yet, but I did have some issues with some sort of small hose/pipe that was dripping antifreeze all over whenever the vehicle totally cooled down (ie sat outside over night), and now that drip is back again.....but thats another story!

Are you sure its not pressure bleeding off from the coolant tank from the cap? I had a similar noise. My problem was bad head gaskets. Pressure was getting past the head gaskets, pressurizing the coolant system and was being released by the coolant tank cap. Your truck does not have to be "puking" coolant to have bad head gaskets. It only has to be releasing pressure from the cap which makes sort of whining or weezing noise when you let of the accelerator.

Mine didnt leak any fluids just pressure. I didnt have any loss of power either. The truck ran fine. The noise and amount of pressure making it past the cap just kept getting worse. I dont know if the head gaskets would have eventually blown or not. Who knows your problem could be something completely different.

i don't know how you can leak pressure without spraying anitfreeze around the surface of your overflow.
mine makes the noise i describe sometimes when i'm at a stoplight without even moving.
hasn't done it in a few days. will have to wait for the problem to get worse before i take it to a dealership.

[/ QUOTE ] I have this problem also , just started also ,notice im taking coolant somwhere and it only does it when the coolant gets low . I could smell it on ocassion the truck has been in the shop 3 times last week for fumes in the truck both manifold gaskets now its going in for driver side turbo intake pipe has a crack , next will be the coolant loss . There one in there shop now completely torn down , looks like a long process, cant wait. fords are crap gong duramax hunting soon as this is fixed iv completey had it from two powerstokes.
My 2005 superduty is doing exactly the same thing. Leaks coolant on cold nights and makes the "flute" noise after letting off the throttle. Dealer changed the EGR valve and Turbo and topped off the coolant and it still makes the same noise although not as bad. Will check as coolant level drops to see if noise gets worse. The dealer could not locate the leak. It leaves large puddles in the driveway on cold nights. It is running down the inner fender on the right hand side towards the rear of the engine compartment. They pressure tested the coolant system and said it was fine. I told them that it was certainly leaking and i would park in their yard overnight when it gets cold again. If anyone knows what that noise is, would be it would be very helpful to getting it fixed. My truck does it consistantly if i really load the engine and push the boost up then let off.
farmerx,
You say your truck leaks when its cold at night, after it has been ran?, or just sitting there for days? Mine sits there for days at a time without running, and no puddles at all. But even after running, it sits in the garage and no puddles. I'll have to check the coolant level, but I hope its up to par cause it was just in about 1000 miles ago for its 15K checkup.
