How about the 2006 models-Are they safe to buy?

Has Ford got their act together for the 2006 model line.To me they(Ford)have had 3 years to work out the bugs on this engine/transmission combo. The reason I ask is that I just might be buying a 06 or 07 model and I'm trying to see if it's worth taking a chance with a new Ford diesel or buy a 06/07 Jeep Grand Cherekee. The minute Jeep puts a diesel in the Grand Cherekee I might convert .If not then it will be a hard call.Joe

Heck, my '04 has been wonderful - no issues except the reocurring bad EBV. I've currently got 62k miles on it and it runs great. I wouldn't worry about buying an '05 model, much less worry about '06.

Treat it well, it'll last.

My 06 is going in this week to have the rear main seal fixed so I guess you just take your chances.

I just had my 05 rear main seal replaced last week. It would be interested to see how many replaced seals stayed fixed. This was my concern and the dealer mechanic says the replacement seal is of a different design than the old one coming out-- a wear sleeve plus different internal guts..

I wonder; seems Ford would have jumped on the seal problem solution a long time ago. Dealer mechanic says he has done many (makes me think it is a profit center!

[/ QUOTE ] I had a New 06 VT-365 at work last week with a Bad front crank seal.It was in a Schoolbus chassis. This was The second one this month. It was Torn on the lip just like the previous one.It looks like a obvious assembly screw-up to me Because it Gets installed with a special service tool and Is Near foolproof to destroy it(well obviously not for some Line workers ).The International service Kit with the New seal comes with a Wear ring that gets installed with the New seal. But all the ones I have replaced Did Not have the wear ring on from the Factory. This Is a Updated service Kit when the seal is replaced for whatever reason.

Re: How about the 2006 models-Are they safe to buy?

I just reached 5000 miles on my '06 with no issues. I've even towed an 8000 lb travel trailer after 1200 miles on the motor with no issues.

Re: How about the 2006 models-Are they safe to buy?

On any vehicle from any manufacturer, "you pays your money & takes your chances".

I've got a GREAT running 03. The only issue with it so far was an electrical fualt un-related to powertrain at all.

Go to Dodge or Chevy board, & you see pretty close to the same complaints we have. Some guys swear by 'em, other guys curse the day they saw the thing.

I think the 05/06 is gonaa be a good truck, but I might wait to see what the 07's are like at this point.

Re: How about the 2006 models-Are they safe to buy?

I've got 3k on mine now. 1,100 miles towing about 9,000 pounds on a week long vacation. Towing started at 700 miles on the odo and finished at 1,800.

No leak, no drips, no stalls. I've had a couple of 4-5 second cranks in the morningm still not sure if this is standard operating procedure or not.

Towing (standard pull behind RV), hilly and widy conditions saw 10 mpg.

Normal mixed driving is getting me 16, average is still going up, I expect it won't go over about 17 though.

I'd like to see my towing MPG go up to 12, but I'm not holding my breath.

You couldn't pry this truck out of my hands at this point.

Get back to me after 50K and we'll see if the story changes.

Too bad you missed out on the family pricing. Hold out a bit and it may come back around though.
