How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

I just got my truck back today after 2 1/2 months at the shop, it starts very slowly. I need to charge the batteries. Is it the same as a gas (single batt.) engine or different? What's the best way? T.I.A.

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Since the batteries are connected in series, you can hook up a 12v charger to one & it will charge both. I'd take 'em outta the truck & charge them on the bench.

Of course your brain said "parallel" but your fingers typed "series" (same kind of thing happens to me more and more since I crossed 40 years...)

My favorite way to charge a dead Ford diesel is to disconnect one battery and charge it, then reconnect it and disconnect the second battery and charge it. Then you don't lose any of your radio presets, etc. plus your poor battery charger doesn't have to work twice as hard as normal. I don't bother removing them from the truck just because getting the clamps off and wrestling them out of the engine bay seems like an unneccessary hassle.

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Best way to get your batteries in top shape is take it back to the dealer that held your truck hostage for 2 1/2 months and have them replace them at no charge.....no pun intended!

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

The batteries are definitely in Parallel. Series would double the 12 volts to 24 VDC. Connecting a charger to any one of the batteries will charge both.

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Word of caution, the alternator should not be used to charge a bank from dead. The alternator's job is to maintain a charge, not completely charge a depleted battery. The result could be damage to your alternator as it is working overtime.

I agree with countrytrucker. I'd be demanding that the dealer compensate you for the dead batteries. 2 1/2 months without a charge your batteries are toast. They will no longer hold a charge for you. As these are not deep cycle batteries, once the charge drops to below around 60% the life expectancy greatly depreciates.

As far as charging goes (if you want to try that avenue), they'll need a deep charge. I would recommend doing one at a time, however, both at the same time will work but will take much longer. If the battery is close to complete discharge, you can expect 48-72 hours to completely top up with a deep charge.

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Now that I think about it, I may get them from costco. Good warranty and they're everywhere.

2 yellow tops would be best but 2 red tops would be good also. Dont mix them.

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Shame on you guys! Aren't you going to tell him about the recharging plug behind the right side of the front bumper?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. You know what though, an on-board battery minder would be useful to some owners and it would make an interesting option or aftermarket add-on.

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

If my truck is in the garage, it is plugged into my Deltran Battery Tender. Same for my other vehicles, including the lawn tractor. If I don't drive one of my vehicles for a few days or weeks, no problem. (Although I make sure I drive the PSD every few days.)

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Do you have the Battery Tender connected to jut on battery? How many amps does this charger put out and does it keep both batteries topped off?

Re: How do you charge batteries on a diesel?

Yes, hooking up to just one will keep both topped off. Make sure you check fluid levels once a week to make sure you aren't boiling off.
