Putting aside the fact that the oil pressure gauge isn't much more than an idiot light (and filters - I use MC), how long are most of you seeing on a cold start (sitting 3 or more hours)? If possible, would appreciate if one of the techs can share what Ford thinks is normal or at least within specs.

Use stock filters and Oilguard bypass also.Using Rotella synthetic. Dealer says no problem, engine will not start without oil pressure.

The concern is that the oil pressure used to activate the injectors comes from the high pressure oil pump. The HPOP has a small reserve to start with. The low pressure referenced here feeds that pump, the turbo, and the rest of the motor. So, although it may start fine, is low pressure to the rest of the engine for a few seconds potentially causing other long term problems or a sign of something starting to go?
I'm currently at a solid 5 second delay, which is not the way it was a few months ago.
tks,
Mark

I don't think temperature is influencing this to the degree I'm seeing. It was in the 70's here Saturday, 30's this morning. We do see quite a variation in temperatures here this time of year and the delay has been fairly consistent within the 4-5 second range. I tried a fill of Rotella Synthetic last change, and the results were pretty much the same.
Thanks though!

If it is always taking 4-5 seconds I would check the oil level before you start the engine to see if there is a drain back issue.
When I do a oil & oil filter change it take 4-5 seconds from then on it is 1-2 seconds for pressure.
I had this issue 2 years ago in which I mention it here before when I was using Wix/NAPA Gold and when the engine sat for more than 24 hrs the oil pressure would take 4-5 seconds again this was 2 years ago.
Since going back to MC filters this has not been a problem, also back then international/navastar stated to me this has been a problem with several and suggested to Ford to R&R the lower oil filter housing check valve assembly this was also in Sept 2004.

FWIW - My truck (see sig) has been this way from day 1. Takes anywhere from 3 - 5 to get up to pressure. And it's true pressure because you can hear the engine sound change when the oil gets working through the pieces.
The only time I get 1 - 2 secs is if the truck is warmed up and only sits for a short time.
Maybe the drain valve was shot out of the factory? Maybe it's just the nature of my beast.

Its into the dealer now and the response is "Diesels do that, they take a while to build pressure". Oh well... I asked them to double check the possibility of the drain valve not closing properly. I'll post what I find.

You do realize that the Oil pressure gauge HA! reads normal when the pressure reaches 7 psi(if what I am told is accurate). That guage is nothing more than a glorified idiot light which is either on (normal range) or off (no pressure). At least it is if you are using the OEM guage. If you have an after market "real" guage then ignore everything after "you do realize" .

jbd,
So with that info to go by the one`s that are taking 4-5 seconds to show oil pressure then the engine is running on less than 7 psi for
4-5 seconds.
4X4mark,
After Ford R&R the oil filter lower housing in Sept. 2004 I was still having delayed oil pressure but not as bad, setting longer than 24 hrs with wix/napa oil filters.
On my nexted oil change I switch to MC oil filters from Wal*Mart and I have not had a delayed pressure since, even when setting 2 weeks.
I think I was dealing with both both issues at the time, housing check valve and oil filter.

I do realize how it works - as referenced in the first line of this post. As DRC mentioned, its the change in the time it takes to register - no matter what the threshold value is - that is the concern.
