How long should batteries last?

One or both of mine went out at 43K miles and I replaced them. Does that seem about normal? Just wondering...

They should last 4-5 years. I usually replace mine before they quit.

It depends on where you are located and what you do with your truck. If you live in an area that see 100 degrees quite often then there is a shorter life span for them along with an area that sees -40 for a while over winter. That along with playing the stereo or running the winch or voltage inverter or using the truck as a grocery getter with short trips will also shorten their life span. On my 96 I changed them out at 11 years but could of gotten another couple of years out out them.

It also depends on when you consider your battery to be "bad"

A battery will start degrading almost immediately. How fast they deteriorate is a function of many things, such as the temperature, how deeply they are discharged, the number of charge/discharge cycles, etc.

It also depends on the quality and/or construction of the battery. Batteries built with thicker plates won't provide as much energy (cranking time) but they will survive a lot more charge/discharge cycles. They will also be more mechanically rugged and not damaged by vibration or rough use.

Typically a battery has much more capacity than you need so you don't notice that the battery is degrading. If nothing unusual happens the degradation continues until one day it just fails to start.

Usually, however, something unusual happens. It gets really cold. Or my favorite: I leave the lights on! Drawing a battery all the way down is hard on them. If the battery was already near the end of its service life it may not recover from a deep discharge.

I would expect three years of service life. Four is doing good. Five is on borrowed time. If I lived where it got below freezing I wouldn't rely on a 5 year old battery.

If you have a good local battery shop, stop in and have them test your batteries. A good shop will be able to tell you the "health" of your batteries. It's no guarantee that one wont crap out on you the next day, but highly unlikely if they perform under load.
Also remember that constantly leaving cell phones, GPS and other accessories plugged in after engine shut down beats on your batteries.
