how many miles can i expect out of a 6.0? im looking at an 03 excurtion with 233000 on it. a lot i know, but it is super clean and loaded. plus cheep, 14000. my 2 7.3s had almost 320000 on em and they are still running strong, but i know nothing about the 6.0. also, does thed torque shift trans stand up a long time? i hear its a better trans then the old one. thios doesnt seem to be one of the troubled ones, as the oasis report says. thanks guys!
There have been threads on 6.0's with high miles. I gave an X plan PIN to a friend who drags big living quarter horse trailers from factory to interior outfitters and then from there to dealer or customer. He put 285,000 on his early 2004 within 18 months and has put another 45K on it. Would have more but he went to a Med Duty truck and uses the 350 Super Duty a lot less these days. He had an EGR valve replaced and the electric fuel pump assembly (HFCM) replaced in the 330K miles (as of last conversation a couple months back). His oil consumption is around a quart in 2500 miles as it has been since new.
The fact that that unit has that many miles in 3 +/- years means it will be one of the longer lived ones. Quick miles almost always means long life.

15 horses with good balance from being hauled behind a P'stroke.
How long will it last?? Not as long as a 7.3 without lots of $$$$ invested.......................

this one was driven by the same guy all its life, all hiway. he was a salesman, leased it new, then bought it after the lease, then put another 120000 on it.(story checks out with carfax) if it was a pig i cant imagine him buying it. im just nervious about all the stuff ive seen go bad with 6ohs on here. its cheep enough where i gan spend some money on it, what would you guys suggest i do to it to get as much life out of it as possible? is modding it out of the question? would an intake and exhaust be out of the question? how well do these trannys stand up to big miles? this has never towed anything as the paint inside the reciever isnt ever scratched. thanks guys!
As far as Modding it goes,It is a risk either way.Since you have no warranty anyways Ford is out of the picture on that part.If you drive it civil and Dont pound on it, a Mild tuner may be fine. But remember these engines are Extreemely expensive to repair if you blow something apart and with the Higher milage and added stress of more power on things with a Tuner well... you take your chances on it.I have a Exhaust on mine and that is as far as it goes with me in The warranty time frame if I have it that long.I work on the International version and there are a few co's that we service their fleets that have the VT-365 in there Medium dutys. There are some that have over 300,000.One I know has only had a EGR cooler and a Turbo replaced in its service so far since they bought it new at The dealership I work at.Then I have also seen the other side of the coin with problem tks.But they are Usually like this early on for the most part.People like to Bash this engine alot but they are Far from the Scrapheap that alot of people make them out to be (Just some Humor). You maintain it properly and Dont Abuse it.Chances are you should be ok with it.
Maybe you have to ask yourself how many miles you need it to go, and then decide if the truck will go that far. I personally love to read about the high mile trucks because all I ever read about is what a pos mine will turn out to be . I've not moded mine (except muf del) and no problems so far. Also... by "high miles" I would hope for at least 300,000 since most (quality) gassers these days do 200,000 fairly well.
Good Luck!

See my miles in my sig. I used to pull campers for a living and just recently quit. Only two what I would call major problems. HPOP went out at 180,550 miles (at home) and the tranny died at 360,660 miles (on the road in front of a Ford dealer). The truck only left me on the side of the rode once for a left front wheel bearing at 185,200 miles. All this was in 40 months, averageing near 10,000 miles a month, towing 65-70% of the time. All other issues with the truck I would consider normal maintenance. My truck averaged 10.5-12 MPG while towing and 16.5 MPG empty. Truck is still running great and would not hesitate to load it up and go anywhere in the country. Hope this helps. Happy Truckin'
