Hypermiling the 6.0: 18.7 MPG mixed

Hypermiling, could it really work on this truck? Oh, hell yes, if done right.

This tank of diesel produced my all time high MPG with me only having to "think" about driving it the right way. Pretty simple stuff if you don't mind the effort it takes.

First of all, my lifetime avg MPG is 15.07 - I've hit 17'ish MPG only on few rare occasions when driving mostly highway.

Here's what I did to get 18.7 mixed driving:

Tire pressure: Close to max
Fuel additive: 12 oz of Power Service
Acceleration: Under 2000 between shifts, and accelerate like you have an egg under the pedal. 0-60 MPH in like 20 seconds...
Reading traffic lights: Look down the road two lights ahead to adjust accordingly.
60 MPH Zone: 62 MPH to avoid road rage
65 MPH Zone: 67 MPH
70 MPH Zone: 70 MPH
Air Conditioning: Under 76* outside and I leave it off. Over 76* AC on but blower on medium to low

That's it. It takes a few extra minutes to get to my destination but the payoff seems to be worth it. I've managed to stretch my mileage an additional 124 miles on a single tank, and I've kept an additional $30 in my pocket. Oh, and don't forget to nail the throttle every once in a while to clean her out. Putting around in this truck defies it's design.

Could it be possible for 21+ MPG with strictly highway driving? We'll see.

Here is a re-print of a post I made on another milage thread last night....

Over the weekend I ran down south to my dad's place. On the way back I topped the tank to the edge of the filler neck, set the cruise at 65mph according to the GPS (speedo is off by 4-5 mph) and made sure I kept the rpm's under 2000. The overhead computer said I was getting 19.5 mpg and I hand calculated it to just about 19 even and that was into a head wind. My truck is totally stock except for the XM radio in the cab and the hard cover over the bed.

I did basically everything you recommended except the fuel addetive...tires were at 65psi (70 is the max). So I think at least 20 mpg is possible. Oh, and I romped on it a few times before getting home to clean it out too.

The one thing you said is so very true.Specifically for the 6.0. Putting around in these tks defies there design. This motor will not tolerate it and you will have turbo and EGR issues.Working them often is your best option. There do not work well for grocery getters.well not long anyways before problems arise. And they will

Truck in sig. Bought in Dec 03

Lifetime average is 17.2

Up until the ULSD, 18.5 was common, now its down about 17.4. Towing is 13.2 avg, high 14.6 low 12.1. Highest ever was 19.8. I usually get not quite 700 out of a full 38 gallons.

Most of the time shift points are right at 2k. Sometimes I'll take it up to 2.5k. If I'm towing in the hills (6%) I'll drop it into 5th & hold 2.2 to 2.5k to keep EGT's down.

I'm pretty pleased with this truck, especially when my 99 V-10 F-250 shorbed, ext cab, auto XLT got 12 - period.
