Rotella 15/40 year round. Synthetic is over rated. All the big trucks run Rotella with a million plus on them. I get a case (6 Gals.) for $36 at Sams club. Cant help you out on the odor, but thats my oil opinion.

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

My understanding on the break-in oil is that they leave it in. It is supposed to have a dye in it that will show up under ultraviolet light, in case any leaks arise during the first couple thousand miles. If I remember right, the oil is green in color. Good luck with your 6.0 and welcome to TDS!!!!!!

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

Any CI-4 /4+ rated oil. I use Delo 400 & have had no problems. Rotella is good & meets spec. No problems.

Most guys will use synthetic in the cold areas.

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

I used Shell Rotella in my Dodge Cummins for 13 years. Always had an odor after an oil change. It went away after a week or so. Will be using Rotella in my new Ford also. I have that permanent smile now that everyone talks about when I'm behind the wheel!

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

Rotella here also. I paid to have the stealership change it at 2500 to get rid of the break in oil. The 5000 mile oil change was free. Both times the stealer changed it, I had a slight case of the romps. I have put Rotella in it ever since and no romps...

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

I changed my oil at 1700 mi, just to get the green dyed Motorcraft 10W-30 sludge out and it was noticebly green. I use Rottella T 10W-30 in the winter and 15W-40 in the summer and did in my 7.3s as well. I can not say that I have ever noticed any unusual smell from it though. Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

It is my understanding that Ford puts 10W-30 oil in them at the factory with some oil dye for the inevitable oil leaks.

No diesel at the moment due to lack of funds (thanks Ford/SLTS).

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

The Shell oil is fine, I generally use Delo 400 myself. The smell you get from the crankcase, is it engine oil smell or the smell of raw diesel?

My truck stinks of raw diesel from the crankcase, even though the level does not rise noticeably. Ford says "this is normal". Well I think they are full of it as I've NEVER smelled raw diesel from the crankcase of any diesel engine unless it had a problem!

Has definately been the worst truck I've owned in my 30 years driving Fords.

Re: I KNOW THIS IS AND OLD QUESTION BUT............

You're probably going to laugh at this one! I have a fleet of ford ambulances, and i use valvoline 15w40. I change oil and filter every 3000 miles, and a 55 gallon drum lasts me about 3 weeks. I have 2 '98 7.3's with over 300k, 3 '01's with over 200k, and 5 or six others with over 100k. I have NEVER had any internal engine problem with any of my trucks. I am a firm believer in changing oil more regularly than spending a fortune on oil and going 10k miles.
