I think I broke a Flex plate

Anyone ever break the flexplate??? Past couple of days I noticed my truck a little louder I shruged it off to cold weather then today when I slowed down at the stop light it sounded like the engine was going to throw a rod. upon acceleration noise stops truck runs fine / at idle truck runs fine just noisey. I got under the truck when I got home and tried to find the noise sounds like its coming from the bell housing area / Put my hand on the bottom of the bell housing and I could feel lots of vibration. Any thoughts on the matter????

Re: I think I broke a Flex plate

Torque converter perhaps. My 7.3 just started making a simular noise recently. I kinda freaked the first time I heard it. It seems to be worst when the engine is warmed up and trans warmed up good too, only noisy at idle tho.

Re: I think I broke a Flex plate

In a diesel engine such as this, a flex-plate with a significant crack(s) will make the most hideous grating/chattering racket you've ever heard. It sounds a lot like a lawnmower wrapped up with wire. The noise will be worst at idle, and decrease as engine RPM goes up because the crankshaft harmonics are most severe at idle and diminish with speed. I suspect you've hit the nail on the head with your diagnosis.
