Im NEW! Just picked up an 04 PSD

I just picked up an 04 FX4 Crew Cab short bed with 10k miles to pull my 26' travel trailer (6000 lbs). I pulled it up to over 8k feet elevation like a dream. I was very excited about this truck until I started reading some problems with these 6.0's.

When I initially picked up my trailer from the dealer I started having problems on my way home. On grades the turbo would spool up but suddenly loose power. It sounded like one of the couplers was not tight enough and letting out compressed air. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the turbo!!

I have had no problems since, but now Im worried. I plan to keep it stock... at least until the warranty runs out.

Do I need to be concerned about this 04? I was so close to getting a Duramax, but when your father-in-law works at the Ford dealer GM just cant compete.

Dont get me wrong. I love the responsiveness of this motor. I just dont want to loose confidence in this truck.

Re: Im NEW! Just picked up an 04 PSD

Don,t worry about it. Just drive it, maintain it and enjoy. The Turbo probably failed due to be rusted up from sitting to long. JMHO.

Quick, sign off for your own good! I have and 04 that has had no problems other than a leak in the rear end pinion seal. I did like you (except I read all the stuff before I bought) and worried myself to death for nothing. Of course your experience may be different, but there are a lot of them out there with very little problems, but they don't speak out as much or as loudly!

Drive it with confidence until you have a bad experience! No need worrying about something that probably won't happen.

Re: Im NEW! Just picked up an 04 PSD

Thanks for your support Diesel and Earnhardt fan. I will be towing next week back up to the 8000 foot range. I really like how well this truck tows.

Is there anything that I need to watch out for with this year motor? Injectors, leaks,...??

Off topic Earnhardt fan - My wife and daughter are die hard Nascar fans. Wife loves Tony Stewart and my daughter roots for Jr.

Own an 04 F350 CC/DRW/XLT Sport 6.0, 41/42k, 2 EGRs and all the recalls. Love the truck, but if you stick around you will get forum phobia. As stated, maintain it, drive it, and enjoy it, they are good trucks.

Re: Im NEW! Just picked up an 04 PSD

Enjoy your truck. Mine is great. I would let you know that the 04's had issues with FICM connectors falling off ( the great Einsteins somewhere designed the connectors to be in the vertical direction and not fastened with screws favoring gravity disconnects ). If your beast starts bucking blowing some smoke, and your dashboard lights up it is the connector becoming dislodged. The PCM is rebooting due to the power pin disconnecting power. Easy fix by just reaching under the silver box mounted on the drivers side valve cover and pushing the connector back in. Useful knowledge if you are out in the booney docks. With only 10K on the beast, you are looking at a possible EGR sticking open problem and that manifests itself as a whole bunck of smoke out the pipe. You might want to consider installing the new improved EGR before this happens.
