Im sitting in a hotel Thanks to my Excursion!

So heres the thing..........I have 104k on my 6.0 05 Excursion, and Im driving up the highway today for 1k trip and the check engine light comes on. I took it the guys at the Ford dealership in this mountain town in WV. The tech tells me my turbo needs to be broken down and cleaned and I need a new EGR Valve...........He made the comment that I must "be idling too much".......Guilty as charged!

He said it will take about 5 hours to do both in the am, and then I should be back on the road with a truck that will get me better mileage and far better power........and about 800 clams poorer

Does this all sound about right?????

Yes it does sound right, Your EGR id caked up with carbon and so is the inside of your turbo. What pressure was the gauge showing?

I dont have any pressure gauge for it , so I dont have any readings..........The mechanic at the dealer here just told me thats what his laptop/codes said. He seemed to really want to knock me for my ideling habits..................I think I was just surprised that they can actually clean the turbo, and that a dirty turbo/egr would affect the performance so much

Sounds about right. This thread should be titled "I'm sitting in a hotel thanks to my driving habits!".

Point taken..........I know ultimately its my fault (even though Im the second owner of the truck). I just wanted to make sure that the turbo can be cleaned, and that combined with replacing the EGR valve will really change the performance of this truck.

FWIW, when I get to my destination, I am going to have the Ford dealer put in a throttle advance/high idle switch for when I leave the truck running at idle at job-sites . The dealer said that this will solve any future issues

Wouldn't you rather do it yourself? I think there's several posts about adding a switch to have it idle at a higher RPM. Do you really require long periods of idleing? Maybe you just need to shut down the truck?

And the updated PCM/FICM/TCM calibration helps alot also. That new "flash" isn't new, it's been around for a few years. If your truck has never had the PCM updated it would be a good idea to get this done. With the updated PCM calibration and the SEIC engaged, the EGR valve is totally closed (no chance for deposits to build up and cause it to stick open). You could also install the EGR baffle kit (6C3Z-9P449-A). It's a plate that goes in between the intake manifold and the fresh air inlet elbow and it has a vertical plate built into it that shields the EGR valve. I usually put those on ambulances but it will work for any 6.0L.
