Injectors or wiring harness problem?

My buddy has an 03 6.0 with a bad misfire sound. When the truck is idling, it clearly sounds like it's running off 7 cylinders. You can even hear the turbo slightly slowing down on the dead cylinder and speed back up slightly, in a rapid sequence. He said the truck was running fine until he was coming home from FLA and romped on it one good time on the highway. He noticed the engine was vibrating vigorously at low RPM's (1000-1900) after the hard run. He was still able to drive home and said it seemed to run fine at HWY speeds, but it sounds and feels very sick at low RPM's. I'm not very familiar with the 6.0's considering I have a 7.3, but it sounds to me like one of his injectors has gone south or the wiring harness is shorting out!? He also has an Edge Juice programmer so I told him to take that off to see if the problem went away. Called me back and said the problem was still there but now his SES light is on. Didn't come on with the Edge installed. Any ideas before he takes it to the dealer to get the codes pulled? He's got 120,000 on this truck and has only had turbo sensor problems, other than that, it's been a good engine!

Thanks,
DH

Re: Injectors or wiring harness problem?

Buddy took his truck to the dealer and this is what they said was wrong.

Injector
Injector wiring harness
EGR valve

Since I'm not familiar with the 6.0, I did some reading. Seems injectors are a common problem with this engine, along with the EGR Valve getting coked over, but what’s the chance of an Injector Wiring Harness going bad at the same time? I couldn't really find much on the harness issue. What do ya'll think? Dealer trying to him out of some $$$$?

Re: Injectors or wiring harness problem?

Here's an update on my friends F350 6.0 truck.. The dealer called him back this morning with more bad news.. Now they're saying his EGR valve, Injector and Computer are all bad.. Didn't say anything about the injector wiring harness this time! I told my buddy I think this dealer is full of &*%$ and he needs to take it to another dealer. Heck, I figured if the computer was bad, the dang truck wouldn't run at all?!?! They charged him $240 to diagnose the problem, which I thought was a little steep. What do ya'll think? Take it to another dealer or fork over $1000+ to have all that stuff fixed?

Re: Injectors or wiring harness problem?

How many miles does he have. Do you mean the ficm (Fuel injection control module) is bad. Sounds a little odd that all of a sudden all these parts are bad. Maybe the mechanic working on the truck doesnt know what the hell he is doing i have seen this plenty of times.

Re: Injectors or wiring harness problem?

I'm not sure if the tech was talking about the FICM or not. From what I've been reading, I think it's just an injector and the EGR valve needs to be cleaned or maybe replaced. His truck has 120,000 on the ticker but most of those are hwy miles, unloaded.

Re: Injectors or wiring harness problem?

$240 is about 2 hrs at current shop rates and not out of line. One injector, FICM & EGR @$1000, is not out of line.

Having said that, once mine is out of warranty, it'll not go to the dealer, it'll go to an independent diesel tech. Dealers want too much for parts.

Re: Injectors or wiring harness problem?

Yea chime in time for me. I have an '06 just blew my first injector sounds like a steam train. The dealer says it won't hurt the motor cuz they only run on 6 cylinders any way. (what!?) anyway well see.
