Question intermittent ficm issues? help!

I have done some searches today and haven't found any threads really close to what the problem is... youtube has gotten me thus far... im stuck and don't know what to do... the truck idles fine but as soon as you start to accelerate it starts rocking and sounds like a prostock tractor... grey to black smoke and all... saw a video on youtube of the same symptoms... so to me that would lead to the ficm fix or replace but I figured I would limp it home but by the time I got off the highway it was fine... so someone give me some input on what avenue to pursue... im up to repairing the ficm or do I just replace it?

If you attempt to fix it and it doesn't work most rebuild places won't accept it as a core - so your going to pay more money for the rebuilt one. If it does fix it - great! but that's the risk. Make sure your batteries and alt are in peak condition before testing the FICM to ensure that the problem isn't there.

Well I dove in feet first and it was a success... test the voltage before repair was 42v and after was 49v all the time instead of 42v slowly rising to 45... im happy so far just that it started again... would like to buy a swamps 58v and keep this one for a spare... just followed the instructions I found on here and it worked like a charm...
