Re: Just had Rear Main Seal Replaced

FWIW....It was posted on FRT site that when engine computers get reflashed (recalibrated) a sticker is suppose to be installed in e.bay showing the #'s. Also said was a "Fed" requirement. Would that be "EPA"?

Also said if it didn't get installed, you should have your dealer/tech. install one. Also should be listed on RO. showing #'s.
Also quick reference (sticker) for who ever see's it.

Does such a law exist? If so, it's being broken big time. Anyhow, why not call your dealer/svc. & ask if your 6L reflashed.? If it wasn't then something else was done or its your imagination. JMO!

Good luck...OT

btw...abit confusing as it dosen't spell out (pcm/ficm/tcm), their just saying "when it gets reflashed"

Re: Just had Rear Main Seal Replaced

After reading all the replies do any of these mechanics look above the bell housing or not? Just seems everyone is shotgunning these seals and all you hear about is it coming back in a few miles. I would look for your self in your own garage or drive way. Roll under their, very easy with the 4x4's and look from the bottom to the top, is it wet above the bell housing? If it is fellas it's not the rear seal. That's all I'm saying, know your truck before you go in. Being well informed has never hurt anyone.

Re: Just had Rear Main Seal Replaced

My 'early 2004' has had a constant oil leak begining around 12K miles. Since then I have taken it in to the dealer 4 times. They have replaced the rear main seal 3 times. I just got it back Friday and now IT IS LEAKING AGAIN!!!! The leak appears to be coming from above the bell housing. Not sure if this is coincidental but the transmission seems to be shifting harder and having trouble going into reverse.
I am extremely frustrated at my dealer for tearing apart my truck 3 times and not fixing the problem. I have lost all confidence and trust in my truck, my dealer, and in Ford.

Re: Just had Rear Main Seal Replaced

Jesus, and you take it back to the same dealer again and again. Not smart, they obviously don't have an idea of what is going on. I bet the replace the seal, clean everything off and it takes about 2 weeks or so to start seeping down into sight or on the floor? How far off am I?

Take it to anothner good dealer with lots of diesel sales and service, you can drive through and tell in an instant if they are servicing medium duty trucks and diesels on top of that. If they don't have a lot of them around move on. Go somewhere else, call around. Warranty is warranty and most dealers love to beat the other guys in sales and in terms of fixing it right the first time. Go in their with all receipts and explain your situation to them, they more then likely will fix it right. I had a dead AC system when the truck was delievered, the place I bought it from got two chances, both times it lasted less the 8 hours. Went to a better dealer, they found what those guys did wrong and had it fixed in less then a day, kept it on the gauges over night and all was sealed up like it should be. Been going perfect ever since. They have found other things on other trucks that some dealers said wasn't a problem. My service business is always with these guys now, no question about it.

I'm thinking your seal isn't a problem, how is it a rear main seal can throw oil up and out of the trans to engine interface and then have it leak down the sides of the bell housing. This oil isn't under any extreem pressures and it just sounds wrong. I would clean it all up yourself, get under their and look until you find it. A bright flash light (not mag light either, something along the lines of surefire lithium lights). Look above the bell housing on the block, around the exhaust, around the glow plug bars, along the head gaskets and so on.

Re: Just had Rear Main Seal Replaced

How'd you guess RMJ!!! After the 1st & 2nd Rear Main Seal, both were leaking within 2 weeks. However, after the 3rd replacement it began to leak 2 days later. It seems that after No. 2 & 3 RMS the leak is coming from the passenger side at the top of the RMS. Only now is the tranny (auto) have trouble shifting into Reverse. Although it has always shifted loudly while on the road, it is now making clunking noises while shifting. I called Ford's problem (no)resolution 1-800#. That was worthless. They put me on hold while they called the dealer. Then they came back on and told me to call the Service Manager at that dealer to have them look at it again. I told them that after 4 tries THAT dealer is NEVER going to see me ever again. From now on I will be driving 35 miles to a much bigger and more professional dealer to give Ford the benefit of having a different dealer look at it. I think that this is going to be a waste of time because my truck is a lemon.

***Update*** OK, I guess I'm taking back some of what I had previously said above... The local dealer called me today practically begging me to bring it back to them to have a traveling 'Ford Tech' look at my truck on Friday. I immeadiately called the other dealer 35 miles away to get their SM's opinion. Said they'd be happy to work on my truck but, they recommend that I take it back to the local dealer and let the 'Ford Tech' have at it.
Looks like that Ford 1-800 # might not be as worthless as I thought Time will tell...
