Hey guys. As stated above I traded in 2 7.3's on an '07 F550 4x4 chassis/cab. Right now it's getting fitted for a dump box. What is the break-in procedure for these 6.0's? Mileage of first oil change? I've been running 15w40 Rotella for 14 years. Do the '07 6.0's like it? I'm sure I'll have many more questions but, for now what do you think? Thanks in advance. Eric

I'm a Rotella guy myself, and have had good results in my 2004 6.0. My granddad was a Rotella guy, and my dad was too. It's an International Engine after all, so I don't buy the "Only Ford Oil with work". As far as filters, I get them from the local International Dealer, for my oil and fuel filters, and they're a good bit cheaper.

Should be a sweet ride. Let's not start another oil debate though....
Change it per the book with whatever you feel comfortable with so long as it has the proper rating.

Oh come on! The whole world knows that the best oil is Ams...
Seriously, congrats on the new ride. Stick with Rotella since you've had good luck with it for so long. Just change as recommended in the manual and you should be fine.

Thanks guys. The owners manual was in the truck at the upfitters so I could not ref. it. So I'll stick with 15w40 Rotella in summer and 10w30 Rotella in the winter. This truck will weigh about 10500lbs with an empty dump box and pulling about 13500lbs worth of trailer. Should I go with the severe duty recommendation of GOF every 5000 miles? Or less? At what mileage should I do the first oil change? Man I can't wait to drive this truck. Speaking of debates it's been kinda slow on the antifreeze debate. Eric

Just my .02, but I'd change oil at 5K intervals. That's what I do anyhow. Since your truck is a dump truck, it will be working hard. You can't go wrong by giving it fresh blood a little more often.

I would never go the normal recommended mileage before changing out the first oil. I believe it is filled with lighter weight oil when new and it gets dirty pretty fast with all the "stuff" from the break in.
I changed around 2500 for my first change and the guys at Blackstone Labs said that most Powerstroke owners wait entirely too long to change out the original oil and that it was good that I had done it as it starts out light and sheers pretty fast in these engines. My engine continues to show good wear patterns with no problems.
With you using the truck as you do I wouldn't go over about 4000 even though they recommend 5000 now. Yours would be considered severe duty use.
Heck I was so used to changing at 3000 on all my previous trucks that it took several oil analysis and Blackstone telling me I still had several thousand miles life left in the oil when I changed it before I was convinced I could go 5000. Of course mine is not used for work like yours will be.

Thanks I know what you mean when it took you a long time to be convinced to go more than 3000 miles on an oil change. Same here. I have trouble going to 4000 miles right now. The thought of going to 5, 6, or 7500 miles is insane. I'll stick with 4000 and do the first change early. Thanks for your input. Eric

Not really. The Cummins is rated at 15k between changes. Severe duty schedule drops that to 7500 miles. Class 8 big trucks go 25k between changes under most schedules. I change mine every 6k.
