Keeping the 2004 F-250 6.0PSDiesel

Hey everyone! I purchased my truck brand new in August of 2004. I have used it now for 6 years basically back and forth to work and small vacation trips and during the summer pulling my 25 Baja Outlaw (total towing weight 6500lbs). It has NEVER been off road, clean as can be, spotless and I LOVE IT!!!! 35" Open Country Toyos, custom wheels, 4.5 inch Donahoe Racing lift kit..

Anyway, all my buddies are selling their F-250's! Oh, the sky is falling, cab off engine removals, head gaskets, EGR valves, yada yada yada! yes, my EGR failed and the dealer replaced it at about the 45kmile mark (now have 79k miles-original owner).

I figure there are half a million Ford F-250's/350's out there now since 2003 with the 6.0 with a TON of miles on them and I do not know anyone with head gasket issues (but I have heard of that with guys with programmers).

In closing, mine is paid off, it will pull a house, it's babied! Are these engines just doomed and its just a matter of time or would the posts of other brands and engines elsewhere be the same? I know it's not a 7.3 but those days are gone with emission issues I am afraid.

Just curious, suggestions, how many miles do some of you have on your trucks now? Mine is not a work truck either.

Thanks!

Keep It

Mine as listed in sig has 125,000+ and has only had a radiator replaced and ground wire to abs sensor. Use Motorcraft filters, get coolant filter system if not already installed and enjoy the ride. I also have an Edge Insight to monitor my baby's vital signs so that I will have forewarning and code retrieval should any problems arise. Hey yours is paid off and still running fine. You are not going to get what it is worth to you if it is traded in or sold privately. The longer you go without a truck payment that's money saved for a rainy day.

IMHO, your just paranoid from following the internet. My 04 at 145K has been the best truck I have ever owned. It had an EGR Valve fail at 5K under warrenty, which was probably bad at manufacture. It has never left me stranded, (which is more than I can say for the two previous 7.3s I owned). Just keep it maintained, don,t abuse it and don,t worry about it.

Add a coolant filter and gauges. Watch them closely and do your maintenance. You should be fine.

Coolant Filter

Thanks! Going to try and find the article on here about that coolant filter and where to purchase. As stated earlier, I love this truck! Looks like the day it came off the showroom floor and with that Donahoe kit it rides smooooother than stock! I just use it to pull the boat as stated. I change my oil every 2500 miles and the fuel filter at 5k every time faithfully which may be too often and given I do not abuse the truck which has NEVER been off the pavement! Had the injectors cleaned and EGR cleaned by the dealer (199.00 for each process). I am no mechanic so I figure do what I can!

Mine has 64,514 miles '04 F-350 4door 4x4 DW.... And I hate it!!! We have had nothing but problems... EGR Cooler x2, EGR valve x1 Turbo x3 and now the FICM has failed. just replaced that and it still won't stay running. Glad to hear a nice word about the 6.0 maybe there is hope for mine... my son calls it a POWERJOKE (he has a Cummins)

Engines are engines. My 6.9L didn't stop drinking oil until it seated at just over 50,000 miles. I had to replace the fuel pump at 54,000. I had it in to the stealership until it had about 40,000 miles. Then, as though the weaknesses were corrected, it ran like a champ for 100,000 more miles. Then, some work, fuel seperator, power pump, water pump. About a grand in parts. My nephew has had it for the last 5 years and it is still running strong.

I had nothing but problems with my two suburbans. Head gaskets, rear ends, plus many more.

Yes, the 6.0l have had some issues. Mine has about 65,000 miles on it and no blow ups yet. I had some issues during hot weather. Irratic running when it was 80 degrees and above. Not regularly. Just now and then. But I have not since we have been having somewhat cool weather the last year or so. I would like to think it was fixed with the last visit to the stealership. But who knows.

I guess what I am saying is that, gas or diesel, it is an engine. You may have troubles. You may not. Maintain it with care and love. Hug her. Kiss her. Sometimes she will break your heart. But, after a little time for making up, the two of you will be close again. But then, as you replace broken parts, put things back together, make up love is always the best.
