Shooter, just to make sure. The two buttons on the trip computer on your overhead console need to be pressed at the same time to reset the MPG reading. You can reset it anytime. I usually reset the overhead and my trip odometer at every fill up. The 'miles to empty' changes based on how much fuel is in the tank and the current fuel consumption. Resetting the MPG calc may or may not affect the 'miles to empty'.
Sometimes I will reset the overhead on the highway to get an idea what MPG I am currently getting. If you do that tho, you have to realize that what it reads and what you might hand calculate on your next fill-up will likely not match.

Just did my first hand calculated MPG estimate today. My math indicates 14.4 MPG. Onboard computer estimates 14.7 for same tank of fuel (reset at each fill up). I'd say that's close enough to be useful.
I reset at every fill-up, and hand calc all mileage, filled to the neck. My lie-o-meter has been consistentally optimistic by 1-2.5 mpg since new. Truck has stock wheels and tires, so no error there!( Could be the Edge, ya think!!) I like looking at what it says; makes me feel better about the mileage I'm getting(till I fill up again!!) C-Ya!! It may be silly , But I usually tap it (reset it ) often while driving down the road to see if I'm at a good speed for economy.
It will start out high and usually drop.
2000+/- RPM is the best it seems.

I fill mine "to the brim" on every fillup. I forced myself to be conservative last week and not drive over 55, and kept my RPMS below 2000 for a whole tank. Not that it would be bearable to do this all the time, but my '03 gladfully reported 20.9 mpg, and my hand calculation was about 20.4. It was the first (and maybe the last) time my trip odo ever even made it in the 600's on the same tank of fuel. For those of you who are new or unfamiliar to the trip computer, the mpg/Lp100K can be reset by pressing both buttons at once. The distance to empty is calculated using the current position of the fuel level sensor, but the usage rate of the previous fillup applies. If you begin towing a heavy load you'll notice the mpg will drop, but the distance to empty does not immediately adjust. That's because the distance to empty uses the rate acheived from the previous fillup, however, as the fuel level sensor drops, the distance to empty will adjust(sometimes rapidly). Therefore, in a condition such as the one mentioned above, the distance to empty will be swing back and forth from very inaccurate, to more accurate during different periods of the usage of that fill.
Please note, I did not read this in a book, or manual. This is merely a theory that I formed from very closely analyzing the readings, and my driving situation.

I never reset mine and it reads 18 with the AC on and 18.1 with the AC off, hand calced is 16.754, filling to overflow everytime. What I have noticed is that the lie-o-meter doesn't take into consideration the AC load. If I drive a whole tank with the climate control OFF I get 17.75 while the meter says 18.1. Interesting that the AC takes 1 mpg.
I fyou never reset yours then it is averaging your fuel usage for the entire time you have had your truck....
and therefore you can't tell the diff from one tank to the next....
sorta like a batting average....
1 hit for 5 at bats is a 200 batting avg...
get one more hit and you are now at
2 hits for 6 which is 333...... a BIG change...
but say you have a 200 batting avg at 1000 at bats...
200 hits for 1000 and you get one more hit...
your batting average doesn't really change - just to 200.8

Instead of calling it a lie-o-meter---why don't you just turn it off-----jeesh--all the extras just make people more picky-----what did you do 15 years ago when we all had manual locks and windows and no fuel mileage meter------get real!!!!!!!
p.s. not directed at bigred at all---but to the thread starter
[/ QUOTE ]I've got an 05 with manual locks and windows

Don't know for sure about 2005 and up, but the 2004 "Seeds" ,per the manual, the AVG MPG with 500 miles on the last tank when you do a reset. In other words it is doing a 2 tank average. 29 gallon or 38 gallon tank gets the same "Seed". Left my 2004 without a reset for many refills and the numbers started hitting the nose. At 20,000 miles a difference of 0.06 MPG.

I applaud you------some people tend to forget what it was like without all these creature comforts-----I just look at it as more crap to BREAK. I admit, I own a Lariat----but I definitely don't depend on all this stuff to tell me my mileage per gallon. It is just a quick reference while driving---not true to life---I work for a cadillac dealership as a master technician, even the CADILLAC ones are not 100% dead nuts on. Just a estimate round average-----
Just to clear something up, on Shooters1380's truck in his profile he has an 05 King Ranch. I don't believe he has the buttons on the overhead console to reset. I know on my 02 Lariat I could push them both on the roof to reset the mpg. On my '06 King Ranch, it automatically resets the average mpg when you refill. (It is built into the dash because I have the sunroof) I believe that is why he was asking the question about resetting it. I'm not sure he can - it does it automatically. You can reset the trip - but that is it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
