location of trans temp sending unit.

My factory trans temp gage went haywire yesterday. Right around 100 degrees on the autometer, the factory gage goes from the middle to full hot. It trips the check gage and engine lights, and put the tranny into a limp mode. It Shifts real hard into drive and reverse, but runs fine otherwise. Temps run at 140-160 like normal on the autometer gage. Tow/haul also flashes.

I have a new temp sending unit coming today. Can anyone pinpoint me to where it is? It was raining yesterday and couldnt crawl under the truck, but it would be nice to have half a clue when I go to change it out tonight.

thanks

Re: location of trans temp sending unit.

I know it is inside the transmission. I believe it is on the valve body somewhere. Im sure somebody will chime in eventually and tell you exactly where it is. I just know its internal.

Re: location of trans temp sending unit.

It's on the valve body, as Weasel says, so you'll have to drop the pan at the least to get to it.

Re: location of trans temp sending unit.

perfect. Is there anything wierd about dropping the pan on these?

Can I just top it back off through the dipstick after I'm done? I'm not even sure what these take for fluid.

thanks
Eric

Re: location of trans temp sending unit.

Pan should have a drain plug, so if you drain into a clean container, you should be able to refill.

Or use this as an excuse to also change the internal strainer and fluid, although a complete change is more involved (there's a flush procedure around here somewhere).

Not sure what the 5R110 uses for a pan gasket, so I don't know if it's reusable or not, sorry. Haven't had to take one apart yet.

Re: location of trans temp sending unit.

From what I remember the pan gasket is reuseable and the trans takes Mircron SP and nothing else. Costs about $4 a quart and I think when you remove the drain plug it drains about 8 quarts.

Re: location of trans temp sending unit.

yup, the gasket is reusable. I cleaned out a drain bucket real good, and just re-used the oil. I'm due for a complete filter/flush, so it wasnt worth spending 32 bucks on new oil.

Pretty easy job, and it works good now.

thanks
