I have a silly ? about the locking hubs on my 06 F350.
What is the point of having locking hubs. If engaging 4x4 is done electronicly, even if the hubs are "unlocked"
I am just asking because all of my older rigs that i had with locking hubs, you had to lock the hubs in, in order to get the power to the wheels.
Thanks for any info.

You have Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF) AND Manual Locking Hubs. ESOF requires the truck to roll a few feet in order to engage. If you get into trouble before they do, you can still manually lock the front wheels. It's also nice because sometimes the ESOF dosn't work due to dirt in the hubs or a vacuum leak, but the Manual Hubs will still get you out of trouble (or into more trouble if that's what you prefer).

What part of "shall not be infringed" do you NOT understand?
The ESOF or electronic way to lock the hubs, is for ease of use, it operates off of the Vacuum pump, if the system gets a leak or the pump stops working ESOF will not work but you will still be able to lock the hubs Manually down at the wheel.

That wasnt a silly question, I was wondering the same thing. My '99 explorer had ESOF and my 350 has the locking hubs. I was thinking "Why did they go back to the old locking hubs", but now I see.
ESOF - you can use from inside the cab.
Manual - turns on 4x4 instantly, and will even work if ESOF is broken.
Thanks for the info

Simply turning the back up locking hubs into the "locked" position does not put your truck into 4wd. You still have to engage the switch inside the cab. The switch does two things, engages thet transfer case and locks the hubs. If the hubs fail, you can lock them in manually, but if the transfer case fails to engage electronically you are screwed.

Redundancy... airplanes got it and folks love it.... spaceships got it and astronauts love it..... give it to a truck driver and he will get confused...
Nastiness aside... there's millions and millions of dollars that goes into designing one of these trucks.... With corporate and shareholders clamouring for increased earnings, you can pretty well be that, if a feature is there, it is there for a specific reason.... if a device is there, it is there for a specific reason....
No need for confusion.... if the reasoning escapes the consumer, a simple, direct question can be answered.....
FWIW, many with little experience will couch their question to avoid looking like they have little experience - usually winds up messy....
