With any of the auto manufacturer's you pays your money & takes your chances.
My 03 has been a good running, comfortable truck, and was $1000 cheaper the Duarmax I was looking at, and I couldn't get a straight answer outa the Dodge dealer.
Drive them both, and see which one is best for you.

the 7.3 is paid for and has been for a while. I have taken real good care of it but am concerned with the problems I have had,
1. power steering pump went out under 5k (not that big of a deal)
2. cps went out (pretty common)
3. found 2 oil jet coolers in the oil pan (a bit of a problem)
4 fuel sensor went out (small problem
5. now have a binding issue when towing my 5er up an incline from a dead stop. seems like the 4 wheel drive is binding and I am only in 2 wheel drive.
figure I would get a new truck before the emission changes in 07

I have many fords, chevys, and dodges for my business. I will never have another ford 6.0. I have a 99 7.3 with 328k miles and still going strong with few minor problems, my 02 7.3 with 90k has not gone in the shop for one thing. My own personal truck 04 6.0 with 45k has been in many times for wiring harness problems and injectors. And my wives 04 duramax with 50k has not been in the shop for anything. All of my dodges with the cummins have held up very well except for the automatic transmissions and having to replace the brake often. If I was you I would be getting a duramax, my next personal truck most definetly will be one.
The broken oil jets will be covered under the engine warranty (providing you do not have more then 100k on the clock) and yes this is a big problem. If you are having drive train binding problems with the 4wd system make sure the hubs are actually unlocking. You may have a stuck hub.
The warranty on the engine is 100k miles and 5 years. You are still under the engine warranty. Get it to the dealer asap, will cost you $100 deductible... Basically everything that touches oil or emissions system is under the extended warranty.
Hopefully you still have the jets that fell out when you changed the oil.
SOF - shift on the fly. The transfer case is engaged via an electric motor and the hubs lock and unlock via a "puff" from the vacuum system.
Jack up the front end and see if each wheel turns w/o turning the front shaft.

Thanks for the help. The oil Jets have been replaced, what an ordeal that is.
I will jack the truck up and check the shaft. I do have shift on the fly

im on my second 6.0L and they suck. i love the truck but i just started to have a problem with the '06. it didn't start yerterday, and had oil leaking issues when it was one month old.(that was fixed) the '06 is alot louder than the duramax and cummins, and ALOT louder than my '03 (no big deal). my '03 was a buy back and got the '06 cheap, now im starting to wonder if i made the right decision? if i had a 7.3 i would keep it as long as i could. i'v heard some guys that have duramaxs tell me they have various problems too. i have not heard anything bad about the cummins motors. im not a fan of dodge trucks but that is the one i think has the LEAST amount of problems.

dodge has problems with the auto tranny, and the rear seat space is the smallest of the 3

Take your 7.3 in, or get a 6.0. If you must get out of a ford, get a Dodge, almost bought one myself only thing that stopped me was the interior space and the new front end. Now that I have a 6.0, I love it though, more so than the dodge.

Ok, guys, once more, with feeling. The Chevy truck is a piece of crap. I'd rather have a mid-90's Ford than a brand new Chevy at any cost. My employer leases these trucks, and they constantly FALL APART! They are cheap as hell from the bottom up, and I really don't care if they have a rocket engine in them. You will be disappointed if you are used to a Ford. Their diesel engine has plenty of power, until the compression blows the head gaskets out of it because it has aluminum heads on a cast iron block. It was a poor design from it's inception, and I am suprised that the Japanese would do it that way.
With that said, I have made the swap from 7.3 to 6.0, and both of my trucks have been very good to me, however, I don't tow heavy too often, but I do run it rough daily. There are some amenities absent from the '02 to the '05 that I noticed right away, and was unhappy with. My new truck has more power at high rpm, less at low rpm. All in all, I am happy with my '05, it has been trouble free for the 24K miles I have put on it. Later '02 7.3's have cheaper connecting rods in them, which pushed me in the direction of the 6.0
Dodges can't keep auto trannies behind them. If you will settle for a stick, you might be OK.
Just my opinion, take ir or leave it.
