Re: Looking at trading in the 7.3

The bodies alone is enough reason not to go with a chevy if you do any kind of off roading, rough terrain, etc. The chevrolets just do not hold up to that. The door hinges are welded to the body, so door adjustments are out of the question. The sheetmetal has been known to crack under the weight of a toolbox or headache rack on the bed rails. The engine seems to be pretty good, the tranny not as good as the new torqshift. Chevy has a nicer interior. I just went through this, was a die hard chevy fan for years, now got a used 05 f250. Dodge has constant tranny problems, and I know of several unhappy owners of some newer cummins trucks, some have switched back to Ford, others wish the could afford to.

Actually.... time to get check out the MegaCab. I have to admit that if Dodge had that available when I was shopping for a diesel, I'd likely be driving one. The word 'roomy' is hardly adequate. Its hard to beat the Cummins motor for overall longevity and dependability. The new Dodge auto tranny seems to be holding up fine - its just missing a gear or two.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy another '05 or beyond 6.0 PSD. Mine has been great. I've read the horror stories about the '03's and some '04's but I think most readers on this site have noticed this section has a lot less problem posts that it used too.

I looked at the Dodge Megacab and was disappointed that it is only available
in a short box, so its a non-starter for me. I can't understand why Dodge
doesn't bring out a full-size crew cab to really compete with Ford and
Chevy. The other thing about Dodge is that I couldn't build the truck the
way I want it on their website. They just don't have the options that Ford
has.

Sorry to be ugly...but if you think the Torqshift is a better transmission than the Allison...you smokin some good dope. My local Ford service technician/advisor tells me the Torqueshift is a good transmmission but, "Not as good as the Allison". They sell both at his dealership. Come on guys be at least a little bit objective.

Re: Looking at trading in the 7.3

The 48re has proven to be a reliable tranny, more so than the TS and Allison.

The mega cab dwarfs the sd and gm crew for interior room. Too bad about the pitiful short box. Who knows how bad that will hurt sales.

The warranty on the engine is 100k miles and 5 years. You are still under the engine warranty. Get it to the dealer asap, will cost you $100 deductible... Basically everything that touches oil or emissions system is under the extended warranty.

Hopefully you still have the jets that fell out when you changed the oil.

SOF - shift on the fly. The transfer case is engaged via an electric motor and the hubs lock and unlock via a "puff" from the vacuum system.

Jack up the front end and see if each wheel turns w/o turning the front shaft.

Good luck,
mark

[/ QUOTE ]

I jacked up the front and both front tires spin independently, with no front drive shaft movement. the wheels are mounted securely with no side to side or up/down movement
