Lots of smoke, missing and no power

I've got a 2003 F250. The truck and engine are bone stock, never been flashed. Still the original program from June 2003 with 68,000 miles on it. Never had a problem, no leaks, ran great.

This morning started up with the usual cold clanking blue smoke symphony, but as I was driving down the road I noticed the turbo sound was much more pronounced. At high speed it sounded like a jet, and every time I let off the gas pedal I got the turbo farts. Then while running at about 70 MPH all of sudden the truck starts bucking and missing and there is a ton of gray/black smoke pouring out the tailpipe. Pulled over and the engine just idled normally. Went to go again and as soon as I got to about 40mph the show started all over again. Pulled over again idled normal, this time when I went to pull away as soon as I put my foot on the pedal the engine would start to pull then miss and jerk. Stopped again thought, oh this is it, and shut it off. Arranged for a ride.

Thought again let me see if I can move it to a better location or nurse it to the dealership. Started it up, and it ran great. Drove over to the dealership (20 miles) no problem, drove it home ran great. Drove it around this afternoon about 50 miles perfect!

Now I'm scared. Was this just an aberation or do I have a ticking time bomb? Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to take it to the dealer if I don't have to.

thanks,

mike

Re: Lots of smoke, missing and no power

It was overboosting when you get the backlash like that through the Intake after letting off.More than likely The Vanes are sticking causing this. The EGR could also be playing a part in the problem. But what you experienced at first was overboost. Then the Bucking and snorting deal was Not enough boost and too much fuel.Sometimes they will even backfire though the Intake in extreme cases when the vanes stick and you are not getting enough air into it.

Re: Lots of smoke, missing and no power

Thanks for the info grounder.

I swear the thing sounded like a gasser backfiring. Figured it was other noises, never had a diesel backfire before. I guess it's time to take it in for some turbo work.

Re: Lots of smoke, missing and no power

are you inclined to doing some small repairs to it? if so get up on the frt. of the trk. then look to the right of the fuel filter. there is a small sensor w/ a grey connector attached. pull the connector & use a 13/16 deep well socket & push it down ever so lightly till it locks doawn on the sensor & turn it ccw & check it for carboned up. this is the IAT2 sensor.use some chemtool to clean it then use brakekleen to dry it out. then reinstall it. if you want to remove the egr yourself, i can tell you how to do it. the IAT2 sensor will be all carboned up i guarantee. the pcm uses this sensor to moitor intake air temps along with the MAF/IAT1 sensor which is a part of it. [/ QUOTE ]Yep I know what you mean.I work on Diesels for a living.I had a similar issue with a C-13 CAT in a Pete.As soon as you would get up to 1800 rpm pulling the gears and start to build max boost. It would Backfire through the Intake and The ECM would Derate the engine to Idle,During all this White Fuel smoke was pouring out the stacks enough to Wipe out the road behind you .It would Not leave any codes in the ECM everytime it did it.Well I happend to look down at the Aircleaner restriction gauge right before it Backfired again and it was Pegged.Turns out the Customer Put the wrong Airfilter In the Housing. As soon as It started to Make some serious Boost It would suck the whole Aircleaner element Up into the Housing top and choke off the Air to the engine and Backfire through the Turbo, and I mean a good Bang...,Obliterate the Cars and road behind me with Clouds of White fuel smoke then shut down LOL!!!.Really it was pretty funny actually because every time It did it I had traffic snarled up behind me like you wouldnt believe.
