Loud booom !

Today while driving, pulling a heavy, but not a terrible load, I heard and felt an extremely loud boom. When I got pulled over and raised the hood I saw that the black pipe that sits just forward of the fuel filter had blown off. Does anyone know why this would happen? The engine has made strange noises since day one and it has blown oily dirt onto the bottom of the hood for a while. When the hose blew off today it belched a big load of junk up on the hood in the same place. I also got under the truck and saw oil? leaking onto the frame beneath the bottom of the same hose. I should mention that I've unplugged the EGR wire because the engine won't hardly run with it plugged in. Is this engine possessed?

Re: Loud booom !

The leak on the underside of the hood that you were seeing is probably the oil from the crankcase vent in the intake system.
That's normal.

The hose can blow off if that clamp is not tight.

You don't say what year your truck is, but I can guess from the "black plastic" description that it's a 12/03 to present build.

Basically, $4it happens.

There is a revised clamp to help with this problem. not sure if you already have it though.

Be sure to clean the pipe well where it seals (degrease it) and then put the clamp back on. The torque spec should be moulded into the plastic tube. Make sure the tube isn't split or damaged.

Thanks so much for your reply. This made me quite nervous after my other problems.

Re: Loud booom !

The clamp on that tube (called the CAC) needs to be cleaned up and tightened up or it'll blow it off again.

The oil on the other end is the first I've heard of someone elses doing it. Mine does. I removed the CAC, cleaned it up inside and out and reinstalled and the thing is still leaking oil at the bottom a little. The oil in the tube settles and pools up at the bottom and I suspect on more than people know, they leak out the connection down there.

I thought my streering gear box was leaking when I first saw it.

I may talk mine in for the new one. I caught the upper clamp before it blew it off and tightened it up so mine never blew, but it was trying too.
