Loud scraping noise and power loss - Diesel Forum

I pulled a 10.000 lb load up a long grade yesterday and all of a sudden we heard a loud scraping noise and a loss of boost and power. It wouldnt do it steady but rather jerky motion. I found if I kept the boost below 20 PSI it wouldnt occur, but if it boosted to 25 plus for 30 seconds it would happen again. The motor has a Edge chip and 4" exhaust. Is this the turbo causing this? Oh the truck is an 03 6 liter F350.

I posted a question like this on Saturday night and got no response. Mine is doing the same thing. The noise sounds like running through a puddle of water and it hitting the underside of the wheel well real hard. Mine seems to do it when you let off of the gas pedal. I do have a 4" exhaust but no HP module or boost gauge.

Standard answer..... remove the power adder and retry.

Diesel Specialists Inc doesn't pay my bills.... they don't send me to school.... they don't make my job easier.... If you contact them, they will likely tell you to take your truck to the dealer... their chip is perfect.

The dealer will tell you that you either neeed to remove the power adder before they can work on it (no manufacturer is in the habit of fixing a third party vendors screw ups) or they may tell you bad things.

At any rate.... before the dealer will help you, you will remove the chip.... one way or another.

Sorry I can't be more positive.... if my repair description includes any lines alluding to repairing a chip concern, I wont (and shouldn't) get paid....

Thats precicley what I have done. Now I need another trailer to do some testing with. Thanks for the input.

I think the noise you are hearing is the turbo dumping boost.I asked the same question awhile back and that was whatI was told.Next time it does it watch your boost gauge and see If it drops just after the noise.Also found out if I keep the RPM's above 2000 I havent had the problem.I think this is a piss pore design from FORD on how to get rid of not usable boost but that is what we are all stuck with for now.Just my thoughts. That fits with my issue posted earlier. When the truck was first cranked up after sitting for 2 weeks the exhaust sounded loud like it does immediately after start up for only a second or 2. The only problem was the sound did not go away like the waste gate was stuck open. It finally got back to normal after a few miles. Now the loud noise happens when you let off of the gas suddenly and misses under hard acceleration. Going to the shop on Monday...

The noise is from excessive boost trying to go back though the turbo. A small amount is acceptable in a situation where towing or moderate to heavy throttle is applied and then pedal released quickly or sudden rpm drop from a shift etc. A power adder will make it worse. I have had a rash of turbos with sticky vanes latley causing this concern on stock trucks with no load on them. These turbos do not "dump" boost.

this one sounds like your downpipe is hitting the firewall.

The main post sounds like a VGT issue.
Also, i've seen the rubber grommet for the filter minder get sucked through the turbo. Grinding and loss of power is the result (well, that and a new turbo)

I have experienced this same thing on many occasions while towing with my '04 6.0 F250 FX4 CC Lariat. When I first experienced this I thought I was going to break down. In order to make the truck stop shaking and grinding I learned to let off the gas so that the transmission downshifts and then it's OK until I get to the next little hill. It seems the heavier the load in tow, the more frequent the occurance.

When I asked the dealer about this problem they looked at me like I was crazy and said they have no info about this problem. They wanted to duplicate the occurance and drive my truck with the trailer attached. I said no and instead looked online for answers. After reading info on this forum I found out that this is no issue that Ford is willing and/or able to fix.

In my opinion No truck should shudder and loose power (as hundreds of other 6.0 owners have previously described on this forum) because you are simply towing within the recommended guidelines. I and am extremly unhappy with Ford for selling a $45K truck with such a huge FLAW with the engine/transmission!!! For me the whole reason for spending so much $$$ to buy this truck is to be able to tow my boat or camping trailer with no problems. Unfortunatly my Ford has had it's share of other problems but this "turbo burpping" issue while towing is the most disturbing. I wish Ford would
1) Admit that this is a Problem with their trucks
2) FIX IT!!!!
Perhaps they think that it is cheaper for them to lose some unhappy customers than to step up to the plate and deliver. Shame on you Ford!!! [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sick.gif[/img]

My dealer called me today and said they are replacing the whole turbo. They got it to duplicate the power loss and the turbo burp back through the air cleaner very loud. Looks like I am without a truck for the weekend.
