Low power on Cold Start

The last couple of mornings I have noticed that the 6.0 Excursion has become quite the slow poke in the morning. Once its warmed up it runs great. Also I have noticed the mile or two in the morning has a dramatic affect on the Lie-o-meter MPG. It will drop .2 to 15.3 during that short distance but by the end of the day(about 50 miles of driving - all city) it's back to 15.5 or so. This truck is new to me in the last month so not alot of history availible. I do know the guy who had it prior and I know that he had the new flash recall applied.

My issue is that we will be towing our boat about 800 miles this weekend and i do not want to end up stranded. We still have our old Excursion we could take but the new one is much nicer...

Is this normal and i just being paranoid?
Or is this a precursor to a problem?

Stats
2003 Excursion 6.0 Eddie Bauer w/57000 miles

The Other Excursion
2002 7.3 XLT w/64000

Re: Low power on Cold Start

All diesels are like that when they are cold. Every single one that I have owned. It's good to take it easy on them also when they are cold, just be easy with them. Dodge, chevy, and ford diesels are all the same so don't think that it is only the fords.
