Changed my oil and fuel filters a couple days ago and only choice auto zone had for fuel filters was "Luber Finer". Ok- surely fuel filters are that big of a difference if changed regularly- WRONG!
I put new filter on top and frame water seperator as I have so many times. Key on an off 3 times fire up and its running....till the top filter res runs out shortly after backing off slab and proceeding to run cows down from hay field.
Start trouble shooting and no fuel in top... pull filter out and check o-rings,etc.. and can not figure out anything. Decided to look over new filter to make sure I didnt do something stupid if that was even possible and discover that plastic tube inside of filter is moving in and out a couple inches. Dig old fuel filter from dumpster (also Luber finer with 15,000 miles on it) and notice tubes not supose to move. Look inside HP... whatever its called (water sep/fuel housing) and study design and see rubber plunger on shaft,etc... see how it works,etc... Ok bad filter # 1 Take if back to store, show guy and he agrees based on new filter in box, new broke filter, and old filter I take to him. He has no other filters but gives me a new luber finer... no problem swapping out.
Go home and study New (#2) filter and push on it a little and it appears to be fine. Put it in truck, turn key cycle 3 times... and power choke fires up....2003 F250 4x4 6.0 by the way....( yes new motor was dropped in at 6,000 miles and pratically brand freakin new cause of EGR problems) ( Ford wanted to rebuild, but after fighting had brand new engine and all dropped in- another story
So problem solved- Wrong....drive 10 miles to work and to lunch, mess around town and after work go pick up kids. Coming home about 5 miles from town and about 5 miles from home truck starts losing all power... running out of fuel. Man, I am not happy. Finally dies. Let it sit and cycle key and guess what it fires up....barely runs a little farther same thing. took like 6 short runs to make it home. Check top filter after it dies last time and as I thought- no fuel. Cycle key and it slowly starts filling up top res.. pull lower filter and it too has come half away apart and is barely pushing plunger in I guess enough to trickle fuel. Bad filter #2 Probably same batch. Hopefully just a defect in a few and not an entire batch of many.... You can see where plastic is bonded by heat or whatever and just came apart. inner tube slides in and out couple inches just like first... I guess it gave way after one day...
Call brother in law that works in next bigger town of Brenham- and he brings me home motorcraft filter from work with his discount is was 10 bucks cheaper- go figure!
Just put it on and went for a spin and runs great... Filter looks to be built way better! I wont use another luber finer....glad it happened near home and not 6 hrs away at deer lease.
I am glad I figured this out....a bad mechanic could have blamed entire unit and replaced for hundreds of bucks when just a crappy built filter.
Lesson learned, These filters (all of them) were designed for this specific engine. When you start replacing them with will fit, your only asking for aggravation.
I watch ebay and buy filters in quantity when the price is right. And I only buy Motorcraft or Racor. I got fuel filters for and average of $12 ea for 6 of them.

that would be my luck...thanks for the info. Problem is I dont trust the truck. And I only have like 70,000 miles on it, that should not even be broken in good yet!
Everytime I take off and go to the deer lease 6 hrs away I wonder if this will be the trip I break down, blow a head gasket, have EGR problems, etc.... and that is sad. This truck was my first new truck and is decked out, regency package,etc.. cost way too much to have to have a new motor put in at only a couple months old. Then it took over a month to get it back.....problems after problems...in the shop over a dozen time. Even had to have the entire trottle pedal inside replaced?
....but I still love my Ford Truck! (when its running right)

Good advice - you will imagine more problems than you will likely see. Get an AAA membership for peace of mind and stuck at the side of the road problems and enjoy !

When I had problems in northern Canada, AAA came through and paid $357 to tow me into Dawson City. Worth the annual fees.

I'm not sure what to say but I've had many Luber Finer filters for both oil / fuel now at 160.000 miles but my enigine has had coolant problems in which I had to replace engine with new engine after 5000 then the oil cooler + but I had tubo issues when I got the engine and still do with new engine but it was good for some time turbo that is when I cleaned it
