Mercon LV vs SP

I stopped at the Ford dealer today to get a case of Mercon SP and was informed that just recently Ford announced that the New LV will be taking the place of SP in all Torqshift trans vehicles. The parts worker said the Mercon SP will be phased out as supply is exhausted. The price will be the same, for me it was $4.61 a quart.

To meet the performance demanded by Mercon LV, most products will need to be formulated with Group III oils, Ved added. "Based on Mercon LV's viscosity, shear stability and antioxidancy requirements, use of higher-end Group IIs, Group III and PAOs will be the best scenario." He said there seems to be adequate supply of Group IIIs to meet the volume needs, as the LV market develops; also, there will be less turnover of the fluid, since the transmission fill intervals will be so much longer.

Mercon LV joins Mercon V and Mercon SP as the only current Mercon products for conventionally shifted automatic transmissions. (There is also Mercon C, designed for CVTs).

"The goal with LV was to create a more robust fluid, even beyond that of Mercon V," Ved said. "We aren't yet replacing SP, which is used in our conventionally shifted five-speed and six-speed transmissions, but there is a significant amount of testing ongoing to replace SP with Mercon LV."

That article has been around for almost 3 years now. Lots of testing and decisions have been made since April 2007.

From Ford Tech Service bulletin Sep/Oct 2009:

Tech tips

Approval to Service ALL 5R110 Automatic Transmissions with MERCON® LV

Beginning immediately ALL (2003 to 2010 MY) 5R110 automatic transmissions can be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid in place of MERCON® SP.

Initially only the 2009/10MY 5R110 automatic transmissions were filled and serviced with MERCON® LV. In an effort to reduce complexity, Ford Motor Company is allowing all previous model year 5R110 automatic transmissions to be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid. This pertains to top off as well as fluid replacement. Mixing of MERCON® LV and MERCON® SP in the 5R110 transmission is acceptable. Extensive testing has been performed to insure there are no functional or durability concerns with the use of MERCON® LV in the 5R110 automatic transmission.

Vehicles affected are F-Series Super Duty trucks (including chassis cab, motorhome, LCF).

Motorcraft MERCON® LV is now available in three sizes:
Part Number: XT-10-QLVC - 1 quart
Part Number: XT-10-DLV - 55 gallon drum
Part Number: XT-10-BLV - Bulk

Further information can be found in the Workshop Manual, Section 307-1, Automatic Transmission
