Just got a new 06 F250 Powerstroke...Sold my 95' F250, to tell tou the truth kinda miss the old girl w/ 190000. My most disappointing feature of my new truck appers to be the gas milage. I only have 825 on it but it sure seems to burn a lot quicker than my 7.3. Should I be patient and just allow it to break in??? I am afraid to let it go much below 3/4's of a tank...a 1/2 cost me 45.00! Besides that the upgrades are amazing! This one is a auto XLT which is now just a mid range as far as top of the line while my 95' was a top of the line XLT. by the way my new one is also a 4x4 as was my last one! Any suggestiong on a more aggresive 17" tire for off road. Thanks, Bob
Bought my 05 late July. On a recent road trip, I calculated 17 mpg. DO NOT go by the mpg indicator on the instrument panel. As for the tires, I can't find any 17's bigger than stock except for Nitto. I'd like white letter so that rules them out for now. Like to hear if you've had any luck finding any.
I have a 2003 6.0 and have around 33,000 miles on it and its just now getting broke in. If I drive carefully around town and some local interstate driving I get around 16. I just made 2 trips back to back to Denver and was getting around 23 at around 65 MPH , the tachometer reading just a little under 2000 RPM.

What has F**D done to your truck since new? I went from that fuel ecomnomy to 17 on the hwy after my EGR got changed.

You answered your own question to what have they done to the mpg...
Well, Ford didn't do it all...
the EPA and WE did it...
We demanded more "stuff" and the EPA demanded less "stuff"...
We get a lot more hp and torque and accessories and size and tires...
and the EPA makes Ford reduce, reduce, reduce, and so mpg suffers...
It IS a big honking beast and does rather well compared to others...

23mpg ? It is rare that anyone claims that on a 6.0.
What is your transmission, auto/manual; 4x2 or 4x4.
Also, do you run a chipped engine?

i was wondering.... a buddy of mine bought an '06 and pulling his lawn trailer around he is only getting 8.3MPG....he gets 217 miles to a tank and has to fill it back up......has 35" tires on it but i wouldnt suspect it hurting it that much....any thoughts to this?

Most likely about right. Pulling even a small trailer around town stopping every 10 houses would kill any trucks Fuel mileage!!

Mileage for a 8000lb 4x4 in most cases isn't great in stock form. However, by adding a better exhaust and a little programming mid twenties is easy when unloaded and under 70mpg on flat ground.
Mine gets 23+ everyday on the freeways. In town its about 16+.
On the rare occasions I pull something, mid to high teens is normal.
The single most important variable is your right foot...
Its all about power to weight ratio and how people drive.

I agree, even a small trailer drags the milage down. Running solo, my best highway MPG has been 20.1. Pulling my small utility trailer, farm country type pulling I get 13-14. Pulling my 10K travel trailer I get 9-11 (but that is going over the cascade mountain range). Wind resistance plays a hugh factor too, the higher the trailer or the more head wind the lower the milage. Thats why my light utility trailer hurts my milage so.

Mid twenties when resetting the overhead for short distances in perfect condition, yes. Overall average? That's more consistant with what I get too. Towing my boat I get 13-14 MPG however.

70 or better around town on the interstates unloaded I'm 16.5 on average. Hand calculated. Last weekend while driving around western MN on 2 lane roads and thru small towns, very rarely going over 65 I was at 17.4 with stop and go stuff.
SPEED is the #1 killer of mileage for the 6.0's, the old 7.3's didn't seem to be as effected by the MPH game.
From now on I drive and tow only at 70 or less and let all the clowns pass me. Less stops at the fuel house means you are actually doing a better overall average speed. (1000 mile trips or more will cut your stops usually by one each way when towing.) I proved this to the rest of the group coming back from out west last year. The way out we stopped 4 times and had to add a little at the destination. On the way back 3 times with about 1/4 tank left over. Didn't go above 70 more then for a few minutes to pass if needed.
