Greetings all. This is my 1st post here as I am a new member. I own 3 ford diesel trucks. 2 of them have the 7.3 engine and my baby has the 6.0. The mileage on the 7.3's I can deal with. But why do I only get 14 miles to the gallon in the 6.0? I have tried every setting on my edge, I have changed out the stock intake to an airaid. I haven't touched the exhaust yet. Some of the guys I talk to who own either Duramax or Cummins diesels are getting between 19 and 24 miles to the gallon on the summer blend. Is it time to change trucks? I would love to hear your suggestions on what I can do to improve my mileage or wheather or not to change trucks. Thanks!!
Is the 14 city or hwy? If it is city , that is about right. Kind of low for hwy. Also is your foot heavy? Also consider gear ratio. My '03 has 3;73s, 2wd, gets around 14 city and 17-18 hwy. As far as the isuzu's getting 24, I'm very reluctant to believe these stories. Go to a Duramax forum website and you will see that most claims are in line with the 6.0s. Besides that, "You don't want to buy NO UGLY TRUCK"
Sorry to burst your bubble, But.................
Their not getting 24mpg Maybe and I mean Maybe
19 mpg.

Unless you need to get a new truck to replace your 6.0 it would make little sense to trade for a couple of preceived miles per gallon. If you were to figure out the payback on this transaction I would guess the new truck would be long dead and buried before you would recoup the cost. just my 2 cents

We need a little more info,is the 6.0 a Dually, what Gears does the truck have 3.73,4.10 etc,My 05 6.0 with 3.73 gears only gets about 14 in town, about 17 Empty on the Highway,if you can keep your RPM's below 2K (that's 70 MPH with 3.73 Gears) that will help your MPG's,start getting over 2K on the RPM's & mileage starts to drop off considerably,Good luck.

I had a '05 2500HD Duramax LLY 4x4 and it got 18.5-19 MPG MAX hwy completely stock with the stock 245/75R16 donuts on it. I threw some 285/75R16's on it and the mileage dropped to 14-15 average mileage and the power was gone. It wouldn't even shift out of overdrive at 65 MPH after that and all I did was up the tire size a little. I had the truck for all of 3 months and that's just because I didn't wanna beat myself on a trade. Needless to say, I hated it and still don't care for a Duramax. They say Ford is bad and unreliable, but my CHEVY was in the shop atleast 12 times for the short period I had it. Don't do it. They used to be good trucks but they're crap now.
BTW- I get around 17-18 hwy and 15 city in my PSD with 35's and my Bully Dog PMT onthe middle power setting and a straight exhaust. The exhaust made no difference in mileage. For some treason if I drive 75-85 and keep the boost under 10 psi I get awesome mileage. If I run 65-75 it drops considerably. I run B5 and Diesel Kleen to pickup the slack in the new ULSD crappy fuel and it works. Try some different additives and maybe a small amount of biodiesel.

Chevys are 1000 lbs lighter than fords and that includes the weight of the free Barbie Doll that comes with each of thier Chevy trucks!
HAHAHA That's freakin hilarious... but sadly true. Yeah the barbie totaled my weight out to 6700 lbs in my D-Max. That's a crew cab 4x4 with a full tank.
My PSD weighs in at 7800 with a half tank.

The rule is to never replace a vehicle for mileage, unless you are going from the 6.0 to some type of small hybrid. The last story I heard about this subject suggested you would need to drive over 30k miles a year to offset the cost and since you are going from a diesel to diesel you would loose money in the deal. The best you can do is to run more pressure in the tires, keep the truck as light as possible, keep the filters and fluids clean and drive like the truck has no brakes.
I get 13 to 15 city and 16 to a best of 21 hiway empty. All depends on wind, hills and my foot. If you go to the 2008 forums all three brand owners are complaining about mileage mainly because of the DPF's and regens. If all you got was 15 hiway you still wouldn't recoup the loss and that doesn't take into account that your insurance will more than likely increase with a newer truck along with your vehicle tags or taxes depending on where you live.

You must have had a dog! My brother has the exact year and did the exact tire swap you did. He gained some mpg because of the lower rpm the truck runs at and it still tows trailers just fine. I know lots of guys with Dmax's that turn up the torsion springs a couple of inches and go with the 285 tires. The ride even improves because there is more tire to act as a cushion and it doesnt see saw front to back like the stock one did due to the slightly stiffer front torsion spring setting.
From what I have observed around here, the 6.0 is a bit more problematic than the Dmax is but there are definitely exceptions both ways.
