So on my way back from Sturgis last year the EGR cooler goes...$1600 bucks later to a Ford dealer and two days in a hotel and I'm back on the road to Texas. December comes along and now I'm gettin' oil in the coolant bottle. To hell with payin Ford another $1600 bucs. I'll replace the oil cooler myself....Here's the rant....Who in the hell at Ford came up with that F*****D up A** Design?? They ought to be shot. It's ridiculous to mount these components as they did, particularly since this is apparently a poorly designed system to begin with. There are countless occurences of people having to replace these components. They need to rethink that setup in the future or at least design it so that there is quite a bit less potential for failure. ok...I'm done....for now anyway....
I am thinking of going with the external oil cooler from Liberator Performance. Mine has not gone out, but when I tow my 16000# 5vr, my oil/water temps reach 250*. Mostly on long grades though. If I could keep them in check at around 225*, I would say money well spent.
International...lol....Whose name's on the truck??? You can't tell me Ford gives International free reign to do what they want. Fords design team has their hands in there...you can count on it.
I just recieved my external oil cooler from Liberator. It looks te be a real nice product.I have not installed it yet. The gentleman at Liberator said he sees a huge drop in coolant temps towing and up to 50degrees in oil temps. He also said that you can leave the egr cooler in, because the oil cooler is the main reason for egr cooler failure. I live in CA, that is why I have to go this route, if you dont live in an emissions favored state you could get rid of both coolers.

I am going to disagree with you. Ford has their hands in the programming and told IH what they expected to see performance wise but they did not dictate the design. International designed the engine and chose to put the oil cooler where it is.

Exactly International Wrote the Original Programming for this engine Per FORDS request. They (Ford)Integrate it into thier ecm along with the rest of thier programming to work with the tk..International is soley responsible for Base engine design. While front and rear engine covers, waterpump and fuel system differ that is about it As far as The base design in a VT-365 comparison is concerned. Then again Internationals Highest Horsepower flash for this engine is 300/500 torque. It is Only used in the RV chassis and CXT and MXT trucks. And no they dont Blow headgaskets either go figure Lol!

I have been searching the web looking for some who has had personal experience with the liberator external oil kit. What part of California do you live in? Do you have puking issues? What size trailer are you towin? Does the install seem easy?

Actually, you can't get rid of any emissions device in any state. Its Federal law & applies in all 50 states. Many states are not near as anti diesel as Ca and don't enforce emissions testing, but that doesn't mean you can just ignore the Federal law.

I looked for as much info as possible, but the only guys with any expierience were the guys from Elite Diesel and Liberator. Both company's were extatic about thier products. Elite diesel said they were getting 35* drops as Liberator was getting 50* drops in oil temps. Liberators kit was a little more straight forward, and by the looks, especially after having it the kit is very high quality. I live in San diego Ca. No I dont have puking issues, I am just trying to bullet proof my truck. I pull a 35' 5th wheel. The mechanic that has worked on my truck before does work on the side, I would not want to attempt this project without a topside creeper. While he is in thier he is going to get rid of the pesky STC fitting, and put the upgraded threaded version, as well as the d-ring plugs.

Those are the only two that I have heard of. Elite's does seem more technical. Liberator says that he has sold many of these. I have not found anyone that has one yet. I do not want to spend that kind of money and be disappointed. My truck does puke, but only while towing my 5ver up long grades. Not much though. I already have studs in. Does the kit have good install directions? I will be doing the install myself. What year is your truck? When do you think you will have it in and do a test on oil temps? I have an oil and water temp gauge. While towing, I can see my temps get to 250*. The fan clutch does kick on full blast and I can see my factory oil temp gauge move up between middle and the red. Do you tow with any programmer?
I guess I will be your ginny pig. I have not installed it yet, but if you think about it I cant see any dissapointment. With the unit installed your coolant is not going to be near the hot oil anymore, and your oil is going to be cooled by ambient temps which are probably on an average of 100*cooler. I have an 06 with Studs, I have pulled in some hot temps over the Grapevine and have not puked a drop, I dont have any Tunes yet but with all the hipe on the SCT I am pretty much sold on some custom tunes. I am hoping to have it installed by the end of the month, just depends on the mechanic. I was going to do this by myself, but I am having the stc fitting updated and have heard issues with not knowing what your doing and can tweek the stand pipes. If you have not had that upgraded I highly suggest that while your in that area, the stc fitting will let go at the worst moment. I did not receive any instructions (I will have to call and see if ther are any) As for the cooler itself look's very easy, you just have to put your oil cannister on the cooler and change out some o-rings. The guys from Liberator said all of the o-rings are reuseable, but I figure it is cheap insurance to put a new set on. Do you tow with a tuner, and does it make a huge difference? I am looking forward to comparing temps. As soon as it is finished I will put up some info for all to share to see if it is worth the cost. I am not to computer savy so I dont now how to put your question s in quote.
Seems to make sense on cooler temps. I just wonder what kind of temps I could see towing to Mammoth in the middle of summer. I towed my trailer last november to Utah in 20-35* temps and my oil/water still got to 250* I have a SCT with custom tunes from Innovative, DJ Performance and John Wood. I had a tow file that I really liked from Spartan Diesel, but my computer crashed and I lost it. Now I mostly use the John Wood tranny only file. I really like the shifting. I am not sure if my stc fitting has been replaced. I have had a couple of issues where the truck died and had to be towed to the dealer for something. Both times I was close to home. I will have to look more into that. What stand pipe are you talking of? Did the cooler come with brackets to mount it or do you have to make your own? Liberator also told me that I would have to trim my headlight housings a little to make the cooler fit.
Going up the 395 towards Mammoth is one of the biggest grades I have ever been up(long and steep). Are those temps for your coolant as well or just your oil? My truck never run's over 215* in the hottest of weather and wont go over 205* in any temp under 50*, and when it comes to oil temps I really dont know. Do Tuner's raise your temp's that much? I have read some where else that the Spartan tow tune was real nice. I was wondering if your heads were checked out to see if they were in the Tolerance level when you had your Stud's installed? It seems to me that if your truck is pissing coolant and getting that hot (Coolant temps) you might have an issue with your Heads. Sorry I was talking about the Branch tube, Standpipe just came to mind. I went a different route when It came to the external oil cooler, I have read alot on how the Bar and Plate coolers are so much more efficient, so I went with B&M's biggest oil cooler, they are a much better built unit than the tube and fin style cooler's, not to mention they are alot cheaper than Liberator's tube and fin cooler. They are smaller in size, so thier is no cutting of the Headlight housing.
