JDF..do you see any soot or dark staining on firewall? Climb up & take alook (use light?) between eng/firewall. The ex.manifolds & d.side turbo inlet Y pipe can leak fume's.
I checked the firewall last night the best I could. I didn't see any soot. It actually was pretty clean. But, when it is idling you can smell exhaust fumes within a 10' radius of the truck. Strong enough your eyes burn a bit. It really puzzles me. I have checked the turbo outlet, exhaust connections under the truck, and the connection where it attaches to the OEM exhaust. The only thing I can think of is it has to be where the exhaust attaches to the engine. I just can't see that well.

I have an 06 which I bought new, it started having a slight exhaust in the cab smell @ about 6k miles. Dealer installed exhaust manifold gaskets (which I understand they never had from new). I don't know if I was just paranoid, but I thought I kept smelling exh gases. Back to the dealer, they did the smoke test, said no problems. Took it back again a week later, they then replaced the y pipe, said it had a crack in it. No problems since, 59k on it now.
Think I found the leaky exhaust. Before, I looked at the firewall from the topside, but it looked good. I was under the truck last night while it was running and heard a hissing sound either from where the manifolds bolt to the pipe or the flexible pipe against the firewall. I suspect it is the flexible section that is leaking. There was some soot on the firewall there. How much is it going to cost to fix it at the dealer?

Here's a thread where they discuss the AIC (Auxiliary Idle Controller) modification for your truck. I did it to my 2006 a while ago and it's a neat feature to avoid the "wet stacking" issue discussed in an earlier post, or battery charging due to battery draw loads while idling or a loaded Air conditioning system on a hot day. When in park with the parking brake applied, upfitter switch #4 (if properly modified) ramps idle speed to 1200 RPM.
mines not the full four door, have diff. rims and a bit bigger tire. i wish u the best with that one, seems u made a good choice. time will tell i guess. as for fuel, i try to drive based on engine rpm not the speed limit. lower the better. even if it means being above or below the speed limit by a few km's

Nice looking Truck. Keep us posted on how she performs for you. Having all the receipts and the oasis report I wouldn't worry too much since it looks like the previous owner has replaced most of the 6.0's problem parts. I would, however worry about the blacked out tail lights. My son got a ticket out here in Arizona for having those installed. Even though most are DOT approved the Judge said it was at the officers discretion (what a bunch of BS if you ask me)

The blackout taillights are already gone. The previous owner had sprayed the clear LED tail lights with a tint spray on the outside of the lens. I used acetone and removed it.
I hooked it to my 24' gooseneck 14K trailer yesterday. I was really shocked, with the trailer empty it still seemed kinda heavy pulling it down the road. Of course, I didn't use the tow/haul since it was empty, but it wanted to down shift on just about any hill and the turbo was constantly putting about 10-12 pnds of boost. Guess I was expecting it to drive like the trailer wasn't even behind me. But, I could tell. It may have been due to the fact I probably never was in the ideal powerband range. Most of the time, I was driving 45-50 mph at around 1500 rpm. Would the exhaust leak I have in the flex pipe on the firewall side cause any lack of power, or could it be due to my 35" tires? I was just expecting more out of it. My brother in laws bone stock 6 speed Duramax pulls it without any hesitation. I really don't want to use the SCT tuner to make this thing get up and go a little more. Right now, the truck is set back to factory default.
When I got home, raised the hood and checked for puking. Didn't exists! Truck never ran hot or anything. Everything is looking good so far. But, I have no way of checking the eot -vs- ect difference or the egt.
It will get its first load tomorrow. Going to load the antique JD tractor on her and go about 10 miles down the road to a show. I figure the tractor plus the trailer weight will be about 10K. It should give me a better idea of if this thing is going to have any powertrain issues in my near future. I will keep you posted on the results.

For most folks, the "sweet spot" for towing power seems to be in the 2000-2100 rpm range. You were below that.

Both actually. Exhaust is what drives the turbo. The exhaust leak means you are not getting all the exhaust up to the turbo, so it is not working as well as it should. The tires also effectively raised your rear end ratio. Lower ratios pull better..

I tow a 8K (10k loaded with camping gear) 30' Cougar Fifth Wheel and putting out 10-12 lbs boost isn't unusual while accelerating slowly on the flats. Pulling some of the bigger hills here in AZ (7-8% grade for 7 miles) my truck's sweet spot is around 2200 RPM at around 25 Lbs boost. I have the autometer gages so I'm constantly monitoring my EGTs which stay pretty decent ever since I installed a 4inch turbo downpipe.
I would recommend always using tow/haul mode whenever you hook up to any size trailer (empty or not). As you know shift points change, Torque Shift kicks in on braking an so on. You should definitely look into the possible exhaust leak.
I'm pretty happy overall with the pulling power of the 6.0. I owned a 2001 Superduty CC with the V-10 for 3 years and it pulled pretty good compared to my previous 5.4 V-8. That being said my first pulling experience in the '04 with the PSD was night and day compared to the V-10.

We made it through the first load put on the ole girl. Funny thing is, it didn't pull any harder with a loaded trailer than it did with an empty trailer. Of course, I used the tow/haul function. I did notice the rpms stayed between 2000-2500 most of the time. I never really had to pull up very steep hills, but the ones I did running at about 50-55 mph made the turbo kick in about 20 pnds of boost. Everything under the hood still looks okay. The load was about 10,000 lbs for trailer and trailer load.
The Duramax I was referring to is a 6 speed, so he can somewhat lug it during flat highway normal driving where my automatic is wanting to keep the rpms ramped up. Yes, we were pulling the exact same trailer with the exact same load. Guess I was just expecting way more out of the powerstroke.
I am going to give it the ultimate test the 1st Saturday in May. Going to be hauling 2 JD tractors about 30 miles (most of it interstate). I figure truck, trailer, and 2 tractors will weigh about 22,000-23,000 lbs. I think that will be a bit over the GCWR, but going to see if she will stay together. Keeping my fingers crossed.
