New to diesels

I hope that I can clear my head of all that is percieved bad about the 6.0. I just bought a 2006 Lariat with 68k on it. It's a sweet ride and hopefully is what I have wanted for oh so long. So here is the problem. Just the other day the family and I were coming back from a camping adventure and while cruising down the road climbing a hill like I had for a couple of hundred miles the truck started to loose power for no apparent reason. The engine started to hesitate almost like it was misfiring. To that though there was not a trace of any kind of smoke out the rearend and all temps were in check. Once I had to pull off because I think that it would have stalled.

Since i'm knew to the diesel scene i'm not sure where to start. After spending some time reading through many posts it seems you either love or hate the 6.0. I just want the darn thing to work. Yes it's used and I don't really know the exact mantenence that was perfomed, but the truck is really clean. No leaks, no smoke. Can any of you give me some insight before I head to the dealer this week. Thanks alot.

DV

Sounds like you are losing boost out one of your boots. If so, this was just recently discussed here:

Power loss/hesitation only up hills while towing

Since you have an 05 can you tell us what your boost gauge is doing when you lose power? What is your boost at normally when pulling hard up a hill?

The boost seemed to mirror the rpms. All temps also seemed to be in the normal range. I did not smell anything hot or see anything that was leaking. Also I did not hear any kind of blow by when the engine was hesitating. I hope that i'm looking at a fuel delivery problem and not an expensive injector replacement or a turbo fix. Thanks for the reply.

1st things 1st. As mentioned above check your cac boots for tears or loose fit, maybe even 1 coming off. 2nd, I would do a complete service on the truck since you do not have the maint. history. Change all the filters, the oil, coolant and have the trans. flushed. You need to start with a known base of operation. A plugged fuel filter could also be a culprit and if that is the case it can be very hard on your injectors.

Read my signiture and my post about being stuck in PA. Can you still buy the Ford factory extended warranty?

It could be blow by on a loose turbo hose coupler. Maybe your turbo is starting to stick.

So here it is. My ride is in the shop with at least 3 bad injectors, a clogged EGR, and the intercooler is going to be replaced. Also as a courtesey to me, the dealership is going to test the remaining injectors and if found bad then will be replaced as well.

I got kind somewhat of a lecture on fuel quality and making sure that I really keep up on my maintenence. Guess that's what i get for purchasing an used one. Thank goodness for the remaining warrenty.

Maintenance is everything on diesels in general and doubly so on 6.0s. If you maintain the heck out of, just religious with all of the scheduled stuff and stick to OEM filters and correct fluids, they can be great trucks. I bought my '05 used recently and am doing all of the 60k mile stuff + a couple trips to the dealer for free warranty repairs. Just got a new FICM last week, original one was putting out low voltage and threw a code. Runs beautiful now, just whistles down the road.

I miss the indestructible nature of my old 7.3 but those trucks have issues as well w/ electronics/control modules/sensors/etc...

Hi. I'm new to the Forums. Until I read about your injecter problem I was leaning toward the comment from EBX about the turbo starting to sieze. I've had my share of that happening. Good Luck...
