newbie here. How long can the 06 6.0 last, and how good is mpg

Ready to pickup a new F250 6.0 with 6 speed manual & 3.73 axles (4x4).

Its a supercab, 158 WB.

I don't plan on towing, and will drive mostly highway 100 miles per day. How many miles can I expect from this motor with all the strict emissions compared to the older 7.3, or the cummins? Also, how does this do with MPG at 75mph?

Re: newbie here. How long can the 06 6.0 last, and how good is mpg

As with any vehicle you can always get a bad one, but in all likelihood if you maintain it it'll serve you well. There are more and more accounts of 200k and 300k+ mile 6.0Ls. The emissions stuff does cause nagging problems (EGR fouling, turbo vanes sticking, etc.), but 100 miles on the highway every day is where this engine is happy.

As for MPG, just as with the newer Cummins, there is a lot of variability. I got 17.85 hand calculated on my last tank, which was mostly highway miles. I had an 05 6 speed and it would easily get 19 on the highway.

Btw... I wish I could get a 6.0L with an NV5600 although the ZF is a good tranny too.

I had the 04, without any emissions or cat w/NV5600 it was great, except for many electrical & suspension issue. I ended up selling it as it was very front heavy in snow regardless of what weight I loaded in back.

I heard stories of Cummins lasting 350K plus.. If I get the powerstrok, I need to be able to get at least 300k within 7 years. Other than the EGR, do the new Cummins or Duramax use it? Am I making the right decision with getting the powerstrok--got an excellent deal.

Re: newbie here. How long can the 06 6.0 last, and how good is mpg

i just had my first fill up from my dealer tank. I averaged 17.3 mpg. I got 497.5 miles, 28.7 gal. I got 16mpg all highway onmy 94 f150. I'm happy as a clam. I was hoping for 15mpg, 17 is great. I plan on starting to use diesel kleen to see if I can get it higher, but so far I am happy.

Very few people really get the value out of a diesel (work it long miles for years), but a well maintained Powerstroke should go in excess of 400,000 miles.

I have met several people with 450,000 plus on their Powerstroke. A friend just traded his 1996 with 300,000 and got $12,000 for it.

The Dodge sites are heavily populated with high mileage motors. The Cummin can easily go 500,000 with proper maintenance and there are several documented motors with over 1,000,000 miles. An engineer for Cummin told me they have one they tested with 2,000,000 miles on it.

So, the race goes to the Cummin if you are going to keep your truck for 10 years and drive 80,000 a year. But if you only put 20-30,000 a year on the truck, you will trade that Powerstroke a long time before you wear it out.

By the way, cab drivers around America get 400,000 plus routinely out of gas engines; they maintain them religiously. I rode in a 1969 Ford cab in New Orleans 5 years ago that had 900,000 miles on the motor. Third transmission, stock rear end.

Can you imagine how many transmissions these trucks went through if they were autos?

Re: newbie here. How long can the 06 6.0 last, and how good is mpg

Let's see, mine went through 3 transmissions in less than 100k and that was using synthetic fluid, double deep pan, driving out of OD while in town, bands adjusted periodically and only pulling a max of 11,500lbs. Not just that, how many injector pumps, lift pumps, front brakes etc.

The Cummins motor is a respectable powerplant, same as all of the current diesel choices we have today. I was a hard core TDR member for a number of years (my truck was in one of the quarterly issues [100k club] and I had a couple of my tips published in the quarterly as well). Needless to say, I had a Dodge and to say the Dodge sites are "heavily" populated with trucks over 500k is absolutely ridiculas.

Any vehicle can be kept running if you want to keep putting $$$$s into it, Dodges included. To each his own but for me having owned 2 of the 3 out there and drive the 3rd at work I will take a Ford truck for longevity every day.

Re: newbie here. How long can the 06 6.0 last, and how good is mpg

I've had my truck (see sig below) for a little over a year with almost 28000 miles. My lifetime fuel average is about 15.6 mpg, mainly city driving (always hand calc). On highway trips, I get between 17 and 19 mpg. Towing a large pontoon boat (6500 lbs), I get about 12mpg. I haven't had any problems with this truck at all. Those diesels unlike the new powerstroke had no EGR or Cat's. The older Cummins prior to December 2004 had no emission controls, nor did the powerstroke 7.3 prior to 2003. I plan on driving no less than 50,000 per year & would like the new Ford to last at least 8 years.

Re: newbie here. How long can the 06 6.0 last, and how good is mpg

I have 7,800 miles on mine and I get 16.6, auto 3.73 grears. They say the more miles the better the mpg. Just put the exhaust on this weekend so it will go up even more. These trucks I think will last a long time if you dont run them hard all the time.
