Newer turbos quieter than older turbos?

I've been told that the trucks with 2003 6.0s have turbos with fewer vanes which make the whistle louder. Is there that much of a difference between my 03 and the turbos on the current models as far as sound? I like the 2005s and 2006s, but would hate to give up the sound of mine...the whistle is addictive. Do the late models with a turbo back, no cat converter exhaust whistle as much as my 03 motor truck with the same exhaust setup?

I can tell you that bone stock, the '06 has much less turbo whistle than the '04. Don't know how they sound with aftermarket exhaust....

2003 = 10 vane
2004 = 12 or 13 vane (I forgot)
2005+= 15 vane

There is no doubt that whistle decreases as the number of vanes increases. Best thing to do is to find a local diesel shop and find out when they will have an 05 or 06 in for work that has a pipe on it. You'll get the idea.

i can say for sure that no the 06's do not whistle as much as the earlier ones do. i just put on my 4 inch down pipe to tail pipe magnaflow exhaust last night and i was kinda dissapointed. the engine is alot louder over all but the turbo is still quiet except when taking off you can hear the vgt kill the boost. sounds like a supercharger blow off valve [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
