I just bought this truck TODAY. I drove it all over for the test drive, did great. Parked it at the dealer, started up and drove an hour home. I left it for all of 20 minutes and it just cranks and cranks. I went to dinner thinking it would be a hot start issue. Came back 2 hours later and still no start.
I checked all the fuses under the dash and the few by the d-side battery, no issues there, but I am relatively noobish when it comes to diesel trucks. I had a 2003 7.3L but that was years ago and never had any issues.
This is a 2006 6.0L XLT FX4 extended cab Auto trans. 92,000 miles. It's a good looking truck with a complete service record on the carfax, but now this.
When I crank it a long time, the dash says TCB Fault, but I have no idea what that is and a search was futile...
I've got the same issue, 2006 350-6.0 XL dually. had hot start problems , changed fuel filers, cleaned battery terminals, checked fluids etc. now just cranks and same TBC fault come up.
Sorry to hear about your delemia, when you bought your truck did you get what's called a Oasis Report. This is a dealer item and shows all the work that was done to to our truck when it was under warranty. It wont help you now with the starting issue but its good to have to know the Actual history of the truck. Carfax is ok but wont give you that information.
I bought my 06 about 2 months ago from a ford dealer and got the Oasis report. It was pretty scary and I almost didnt buy the truck because of it but decided to take a chance cause the truck was so clean. Thankfully its run flawless since i got it.
Also as others will tell you you need to get a set of gauges on the truck to monitor the engine oil temp and water coolent temp. This is vital on the 6.0 liter diesels.
Cant help with your truck problems but I'm sure others will be along to give you some good ideas. Good luck, take care.....
I've never heard of the oasis report, so that is a big negative. This sucks. I really like this truck and this is putting a bad taste in my mouth.
I plan on getting extra gauges, but I've never heard of getting a water temp gauge or an oil temp gauge. I guess I need to do more forum searching and research on that.
Well I'm sure others will be along to explain the importance of the oil and water temps. Gauges are a Must on this this truck. Just do a search for Flushing the cooling system or EOT / ECT. Becuse of the design of the engine these temps are Critical to monitor and a spread of over 15 degrees is a indication of needing some Major work done. IE replacing the EGR and Oil coolers becuase they get clogged because of the type of antifreeze ford uses.
I personnaly use the scangauge II, Not as flashy as the insight models but it gets the job done, you can program in your own gauges And the cost is 169.00 from autozone. I got lucky here as my spread was only about 8 degrees indicating my egr and oil coolers are pretty clean. I have yet to do the flush though. You will find out about this too. Who knew, A crappy Osasis report but my motor seems in good comdition and problem free. My truck had 55K on it when I bought it. What sold me was the wife said " Well if they have done all this work already you wont have to redo it again right. " Fingers crossed.
As to your no start condition there is a sticky thread up here that goes thru everything you need to do to test for a no-start condition. I've looked at it, its pretty thourgh and pretty complicated, to me anyway.
Good luck and I'm sure others like xmonty will have some ideas for you.
So I went out to the truck to try and start it today, and what do you know? Started easy like it's supposed to. I now have a check engine light on, so I think I will be buying that code reader to figure things out for myself, rather than take it to the dealer. Hopefully it continues to start and run without issue so I can fix it properly.
Unless you got an absolute steal on this truck, I would be waiting for the dealer to open tomorrow AM to hand the keys back. Don't let emotions drive your decisions. These trucks are awesome when properly maintained. But get one that's been neglected and you could be looking at sinking a couple grand into it pretty quickly.
Assuming you bought your truck in TX, you have a 3 day (business days, I believe) "cooling off" period after you sign any contract. I don't remember all the technical terms, but basically if you decide to change your mind after signing any contract (cell phone, mortgage, etc....) you have the right to back out. I used it about 12 years ago and saved my butt on a used car.
If you do decide to keep it, report back any more symptoms. Assuming you have some basic tools and a volt meter, there are some quick, basic checks we can run through.
A scangauge II might even help you diagnose your problems. For instance, I have mine set to show the EOT and ECT but also have it showing my FICM which should be at 48.5 volts, Mine runs between 47.0 and 48.5. I also have my injector psi setup. Mine at idle shows between 550 and 600 psi which again is normal. Gauges can help you diagnose your problem.
Scangauge II will also show your codes and allow you to clear them. Also take your VIN to a ford dealer and ask the parts / service guys to run the oasis report for you. You might be suprised what comes up. Mine had 2 injectors replace and the motor pulled for bedplate gasket leaks. I was like pulling the motor on a 2006 truck with only 55k miles on it :O
I had a Trailer Brake Controller Fault when a fuse was blown for something. Some states have laws for situations like these. 36 hours or something? Unless you got a really good deal of course...
If you haven't gotten a code reader yet, AutoZone can read your codes for you and they don't charge anything to do it.
If you are going to spring for a diagnostic tool and/or code reader, I would recommend the AutoEnginuity with ford bundle. It is well worth the investment and will pay for itself in no time.
I already planned on calling the dealer in the morning. My work schedule is screwing everything up since I work second shift. I think the dealer will be cooperative, they have a very good reputation for customer service and is by far the best dealership I have ever dealt with. Let's see if they can maintain that with this truck...
Little update, the dealer can't figure it out just yet. They kept the truck to tear it down and fix it. They gave me a nice King Ranch F150 to drive until they get it done.
Got the truck back today, it turned out the HPOP was going out. $1,500 fix for free is always the right price. The truck feels faster and more powerful throughout the rpm range, too.
