Not enough heat at idle when cold

When it's cold (-10c and below, especially -20+) I have little heat at idle. If it's -20c or below it's no heat at idle. Today ( -9c ) it was acceptable, however not great. When the RPM's are over 1000 it seems to pump it out ok. The engine coolant temp sits a little below the middle mark after it warms up (10-15 mins).

4wd works fine, the heater control vent options work fine. No coolant leaks (that I'm aware of), and the coolant level is at "min" when cold and hasn't budged. Lots of power and no other symptoms. 80,000 kms on the truck, 2006 F-350 6.0.

Suggestions?

First off, I don't understand "metric" temperature. Is -10c cold?
As for your truck's performance, I hope it's normal because mine acts that way also. I block about 1/3 of the radiator when it's below 15-20F, and about 1/2 when it's below 0F. Helps quite a bit. Last October in the mountains it was about 6 or 8F one morning I headed out to trout fish and I got delayed with some mountain road construction and about froze sitting at idle for several minutes. Didn't have the radiator blocked yet, and was wishing I did.

does your truck have the uplifter switches in it? If you do you can wire up the high idle real easy. I did it in about 20 min and I am not very eletrically inclined. The high idle (SEIC) will bring your rpm's up to 1200 once the truck is parked with e-brake on.

Yep, it does have the uplifter switches on it. I will look into the high idle mod for sure, thanks! I'm more concerned if I have an actual problem or not, or if this is just a characteristic of the beast . Have only had the truck for about a month so far, so getting to know all the little qwirks, and I must say this forum has helped a ton.

Here is the link. One thing I can say to help save you some time if you wire this up, it's the orange (pto) wire that you hook up to the upliffter switch if want the 1200 rpm highidle only.

high idle

Mine did same thing a month ago here in montana and it was a bad thermostat. Sounds funky but it was the fix. Temp gauge indicated warm also which confused me, but Ford fixed it. Good luck

The only actual oem "gauges" in my truck are the speedometer and the tach. All the others are (nearly worthless) idiot switches that just go to the middle when their sensor senses a specific setting.

You may be able to get an actual coolant temp reading from the odometer display using the methods described in the owner's manual. If your water temps drop significantly when you're at idle, that would be an indication of a stuck open thermostat.

If you want actual temp reading, you might try a ScanGauge:

ScanGaugeII - Trip Computers + Digital Gauges + Scan Tool

I got mine mostly to read codes (had intermittent Check Engine Light). Now I love it enough to get one for my pickup and one for my dad - he liked it enough to buy a 2nd for his other car.

this is a problem up here i have 4 truck doing this at my shop the local ford dealer here has 38 plus trucks with the same issue and no fix for it in testing and working very closely with the dealership we have discovered the following the coolant flow is lost to the heater core ( how was this test done we disconnected the heater core supply hose and ran it to the degas bottle while at idle no or extremely little flow through the line idle truck up all ok ) we have replaced the following on one truck with NO change in results 4 thermostats , water pump , heater core , coolant flush , head gaskets , egr cooler , after all this back to ford to talk to them we were on with tech support they claim this is a normal condition for the 6.0l and no fix is available ( i call BS they are just trying to wash their hands of the 6.0l issue . WHY ALL OF A SUDDEN ? THERE WERE NO COMPLAINTS LAST WINTER AND NOW THERE IS ???)

I'm going to try the cardboard behind the front grill trick and see what happens. I'll report back to you guys. Heat is nice now that it's 2c outside
