not starting with the key...help!!!

I've got a 06 350 6.0l it's mostly stock but the starter was sticking sometimes
all I had to do was tap it with a hammer and it would let go.... it hasn't stuck for a long time now but it won't start with the key.... how ever if I short it by the battery it starts fine and hardly ever sticks..... the key still runs the glow plugs and turns the power on but does nothing else..... has any one had this problem before?

I'm not sure where or what you are shorting. I'm guessing you are not crawling under the van and shorting the batteries.

On my 04, there are the ignition switch, the powertrain control module, 2 fuses and the starter relay before the starter motor. F1.7 (60A) and F2.33 (10A) I'd guess one of fuses blew when you shorted the wrong thing. On an 06, the fuses may have different numbers, but probably not.

Take a voltmeter and measure the power at F1.7. If ok, go to F2.33 and check if power comes into it when the switch is in the START position, then see the voltage comes out of the fuse. Then you will have to verify the PCM is grounding the starter relay. Check the starter relay by swapping with another relay in the Battery Junction Box.

What exactly are you shorting? With a screwdriver or? That may give a clue as to what is working and what is not.

Mike

There's a black wire beside the passangser side battery that has a round conector on it... I've been just taking it apart right there and touching it to the positive side the the battery. with the key on it'll start right away.

Sorry, I'm always thinking van with the batteries under the body.

Probably the electricals are similar. Find an electrical schematic and follow the signal from the switch through fuses and starter relay.

Good luck,

Mike
