Oil additive packages....Delo and Rotella

Anyone know anything about these two? You can only gather so much from the bottle. I read all the posts i could find about the two oils, and from what i see aside from bottle color, they are one and the same as far as the 6.0 PSD is concerned. Just wondering if its possible to see how the Delo handles soot control, and all the other goodies that rotella states on their bottle in the bulleted list.

I just bought some Delo 400 for my second oil change, figured id try it out for grins. I assume its ok to put it in and that its compatible with Rotella thats in it now. Its certainly more expensive, so ill see if its worth its cost.

Re: Oil additive packages....Delo and Rotella

I've run Delo 400 for about 35,000 miles now. I change at 7.5k intervals, and hve pulled OA at each change (I'm doing that for a record of maint.) All the OA's have showed some minor shearing, and everthing else really good. Some have come back that it could have gone longer. My fuel dilution is hovering around 1% or less.

I've never had the EGR give me any trouble, I've never had it romp or surge.

Here at Costco, I can get a 6gal case for a bit under $40. I haven't looked at other oils since I started w/ Delo, cause at that time it was the cheapest, easily available, and met specs.

Re: Oil additive packages....Delo and Rotella

I think you'll find delo and rotella to be almost identical in their chemical composition and lubricity properties. They're both excellent oils and I would allow either price or availability to determine which one you use, as I think it would be almost impossible to demonstrate any quality difference between the two.

Hardly....They are quite different actually. Rotella's base oil is still a blend of "old school" group.I and group.II with an "old school" add pack that relies almost entirely on heavy doses of Zinc & phosphorous for it's AW performance. The good thing is, with the CI-4 standards, Rotella was forced to up the amount of group.II base in their oil to comply. In reality, Rotella is what you would call a cheap built oil.

Chevron Delo 400 is the opposite...For starters, Delo has always been typically the 1st oil to meet new standards because Chevron tends to be morte "cutting edge" in their oil formulation. The use almost entirely Group.IIplus base oil with NO group.I at all. Their additive pack not only uses the old school Zinc & phosphorus, but also Boron & Moly to name a couple. You will also find that with superior base oil, Chevron doesn't need as much Viscosity index improvers either. Plus the HTHS number is higher and I believe the volatility is lower.

They both have something in common though, they are both 15w-40. LOL
