I just got my first FREE oil change from the Ford dealer. I started asking questions about the filters and oil based on what you guys have said. I am going to tell you what I was told by a powerstroke rep. that happened to be there, then I need your thoughts, because I sure like your prices better than Ford.
1st, the Ford oil has additives for the 6.0 in it that Shell and other's do not?????
2nd, the filters we get from the internet, walmart, and others are not the same quality that ford sells?????
I trust you guys more than the dealer so tell me like it is. Is this a sales pitch or bull S/*^&$?
Thanks,
Cary
There might be different additives from the MC oil and the Rotella, but both are good and rated for our trucks, I have been using the MC 15W40 so far, I have a little over 18K miles on my truck now, as for the filters, I have been getting all of them from www.Filter1.com, I have not had any problems. Thats like getting a MC oil filter at the dealer, $$ or buying it from Walmart ect for alot less, until now that they have discontinued them. At filter 1 the part # for the oil filter 57314 ($11.07 each) , fuel filter 33599 ($37.25 both of them in the box) and air filter is part # 42731 ($36.61) free shipping on 6 or more filters ordered at a time.

I'm sure there are "fit-like" filters out there for the 6.0 already. I would avoid those. Racor makes the oil and fuel filters for Ford, and Ford puts them in a red and white box and charges outrageous prices for them. Racor takes the exact same filters, puts them in a white box, and sells them for 1/3 of what Ford does. Use those filters and you are using the *exact* filter that Ford will sell you. Same material, same quality, same manufacturer; it's the same filter!!
It appears that Racor also sells the filters to some online places who then "house brand" them and sell them for even less still. If it's the exact same filter (same patent numbers, same construction, etc.) and you're sure it's made by Racor then you should have no fears about using those filters and saving even more money. But please, whatever you do, do *not* buy them from Ford. It will only encourage them to continue to try to gouge us. Vote with your wallet.

Here is a picture of the Motorcraft verses Fram filter from my oil change today. Only difference that I could find was the price.

Ron ... that dealer sold you a dirty filter ... and the packaging looks cheap!
Thanks for the photos! My dealer told me to only use Ferd filters cause all others, including Fwam were made of inferior materials and might hurt my engine. Will the BS ever end?!?!

They told me it was the new "pre-oiled" type and without the fancy package I got it at a steal for only $29.95.

My Ford dealer uses Rotella-T! I'm going to bring in my own filters next time. Does anyone know if the Wix filters have the same Patent Pending numbers on them as the Ford filters?

I am pretty sure that I checked out a Wix at O'Reilly's Auto Parts, and it looked the same as the Motorcraft that I compared it to. Whether it was or was not a Wix, at this store, the Motorcraft was actually cheaper, so I got it. Since then, I have noticed that the Fram, which also has the same markings in the same places (including Made in Germany), is the cheapest at Wal Mart.
I need to recheck Advance Auto Parts, because for some reason I remember a really low price on the filter. After I check, I'll let everyone know what I find out.
'Sounds like that rep was giving you a line of BS which is a polite way of calling him a liar. All oils that are rated CI-4 or CI-4 plus are rated for our trucks and there is nothing special about Motorcraft oil that makes it any better than other brand. My dealer uses Chevron Delo and they buy it in bulk. That should tell you right there that this guy is giving you a line. The same is true with filters. There are probably some inferior brands out there, but you can't go wrong with name brands like Racor and Wix. I don't know about you, but I can't stand someone lieing to me and I would have certainly gone ballistic on him and he would have deserved it. Immagine how many unknowing customers he has taken advantage of with this line. Of course, there is the possibility that he actually does believe this himself which only makes him stupid instead of evil.
