Oil change interval

Does anyone run their oil (dino oil) out to the 7500 mile change interval. When I look at the dipstick at 5K it just looks like it needs changing. Sooty ya know. I use Rotella T 15/40. I dont have any bypass system; just a stock truck. Unless I have been towing a lot I don't fear running a little over 5K but cant bring myself to go much further than that. Just wondering if anyone regularly goes beyond or if anyone has had problems as a result. The oil changes get costly as yall know. Thanks!

Re: Oil change interval

I have gone as far as about 6300 miles once. I really try to stay around the 5K mark as much as possible. I use dino oil only. I might switch to 10w/30 this winter if we decide to take the winter off from horse showing (i.e. not much towing).

Re: Oil change interval

I've been changing mine @ 5000 since new and don't plan to change. I figure it's cheap insurance.

traildog
BTW,

Go here for Filters $20, and buy your oil by the case @ Sam's club. 6 gallons for 38 bucks.

EDIT # 2: A case at Sam's is now $48

Re: Oil change interval

I thought dino oil changes were cheap? 10bucks plus 4 plus$20 filter times 5 equals$300 25k service 5k drains.

this is why Amsoil is best oil for the money when used with bypass filters in diesel engines.
it is much cheaper and adds life to your vehicle and ads time to your life.

Re: Oil change interval

If your really interested, check out "archives" It's all there & more about your Q. Find fmt's OA 6L spreadsheet. Shows type oil used/mileage etc. & what that means. Good luck!

I use dino. 10W/30 winter (no towing) & 15W/40 summer & chg. @ 5K.

if everyone used synthetic oil, gas would be cheaper.
hey why bicker over wich one is better? both are tons better than RotellaT. What other oil company sells their own filters other than M1? maybe there is some? I don't know, but I know Amsoil has always made longlife filters along with their oils.
maybe Redline is better? do you have any links that show a comparison?

After some thought, IF more of miles were non-towing highway miles, then I would feel comfortable going to the 7500 interval. Most of my miles are in town or towing the horse trailer. My wife drives it across town to and from work (20 miles roundtrip through 29,762 red lights and up hill both ways ) I usually try to drive it to work one time a week (32 miles, with about 8 miles of highway) just to let it run a little bit.

I will not be paying any attention to further posts by the Amsoil guy. I will not subject my truck to extended drain intervals for any reason. I drive about 20K miles a year, so about every three months I spend 20 minutes and $50 changing the oil. I'm doing my next change in about two or three weeks. I plan to use Chevron Delo and a filter from Wally World.

Re: Oil change interval

I don't think I can take much more of this 'Amsoil' crap. Use what you like in your vehicle and please quit trying to push it off on everyone else. If people want to use it, they will, if not, they aren't going to!

Personally, I've been using Rotella T for over 10 years now without a single issue and will continue to use it.

Again, this is my preference, not everyones, just mine, as is my preference to change my oil at 5k intervals.

Re: Oil change interval

I've used Delo 400 CI-4+ @ 7.5k for almost 50k. I have pulled an OA to Blackstone ever time. It does shear to about 30W & stabalizes. Everthing else has been fine, within universal averages. It is Blackstone's opion to me that the Delo does fine a 7.5k. They do not recommend going over that though.

Re: Oil change interval

I've posted this question before, but don't recall getting too much input. If the 15w/40 shears down to 30w then stabilizes, how does 10w/30 do in the engine? Does it shear down to much less than 30w? It would seem to me that a oil pan full of fresh 10w/30 (properly rated like Rotella) would have as much protection for the engine while towing as 15w/40 with say 3k to 5K miles on it.

Re: Oil change interval

whether you change every 5000, 7500, 10k or 15k is up to you. if you use dino all the oils are similar in price. the synthetics are also very close in price. no one can compare the price of dino to the price of synthetic, to do so is like the old saying "you cannot compare apple and oranges". do your research and make your own decisions. if no one does their own research then how does a person know who is telling the truth and not...

If you are going to go beyond the recommended drain interval you must do oil analysis to see how the oil is doing....

I am using Royal Purple and plan on changing it at 10K miles. I did change the filter at 5K though.
