Probably been covered a million times. I'm new to the diesel scene, just got my new 2005 6.0. I can get Amsoil at cost. Any bad experiences with Amsoil or synthetics, what weight to use, when should I change my break-in oil (first change), and what intervals for Amsoil. I used to work part time for an ambulace service, we used conventional 15-40, at 3,000 miles, but that was for 7.3's and extreme duty service. Let's hear your thoughts, thanks.

There are a lot of opinions on this. Here is mine. Change oil at 1000 miles and 3000 miles to remove break in debris. Then switch to synthetic or what ever you want. If you use synthetic you may want to look into a secondary oil filtration system. In this case you may also want to get your oil analyzed from time to time to see how far you can safely go before changing oil.
Some synthetic users on this site who have secondary filtration systems go 30,000 miles before changing oil. If you do this you may invite trouble from Ford if you ever have engine problems because Ford may not think a 30,000 mile change interval could ever be okay and they may not honor your waranty.
I just do the 1000 and 3000 mile thing and just use synthetic blend after that and I change at 4000-7000 miles. This fits my use of the truck, I do not do much heavy hauling. My last one was a 7.3L that I traded in with 221,000 miles on it using synthetic blend and it still ran like new.
Been using Amsoil 5W30 since 3000 miles. I've currently got 50000+ miles on the truck and am doing oil analysis and changing filters at 5000 mile intervals. Currently running about 30000 miles since last oil change.
There's a bunch of nay-sayers out there but Amsoil has been in business manufacturing and marketing synthetic oil products about 40 years. If they were fly by night they wouldn't be around.
Bottom line is the decision is yours. I read the posts about API certification and the fact that Amsoil doesn't have any. So what! I'd be curious to know if anyone has tested cooking oil; it would be interesting to find out it meets or exceeds manufactureres recommendations where API is concerned.
Find FMTRVT's oil analysis spread sheet. Do some homework and check out the results for B017; those are mine. Then make your decision.

How much diesel fuel is currently in your crankcase? Diesel fuel dilution of the crankcase oil is why I won't run extended oil changes. (aka synthetic oil)
No way could I run extended oil changes with any kind of oil. I'm too old school. I use Delo 400 at 5K intervals. The last teardown on a motor at 268K revealed the pistons still looking excellent and within service limits. Chevron even took one back to the lab w/ them to check it out.

Have you ever had a TBN done to check condition of oil additives and sheer?

Is that the extra stuff that Blackstone now sells? No, I didn't last time. The truck just turned 49k miles tonight and I was going to do an oil change tomorrow and send that one in too. I will get it this time around.

I let my oil go to max on mileage and then checked TBN and oil sheer and made me a little leary to go much paste 7,500 miles. I drive almost 30 miles to work and is almost all 60MPH drive, so I would think my oil would come out better than most on oil sheer and additive but did not. I am thinking of trying the Mobil truck&SUV and see if that would go 10,000 miles.
