oil cooler problem?

does the 6.0 have an oil cooler? i do some pilot car work, and yesterday i did an f-350 delivering 2 sheds into new york state. i hadent seen him for a while. he said he had to get a new engine, under warrenty. it puked the coolant out mixed with oil. he shut it down and then restarted it. when he did this, the coolant went into the engine and when it was restarted, the antifreeze did a number on it. ford replaced it under warrenty and he now has a new engine. has anybody else have this happen? this is the first that i have heard that the 6.0 has an oil cooler.

I've heard of it happening to someone else... dunno if they are going to get a new engine. But that seems to be the problem with theirs.

Re: oil cooler problem?

The 6.0 has an internal oil cooler mounted in the valley between the cylinders. It uses coolant flow from the radiator to cool the oil. If it fails, it can leak oil into the coolant system.

Re: oil cooler problem?

it wasnt my 350 that had the cooler problem. but if mine stars puking oil out of the rad over-flow, i'll shut her down and call the tow truck!!! dont restart the engine for anyone. if you do, the antifreeze will contaminate the entire engine.

Re: oil cooler problem?

I've yet to see antifreeze make it back into the sump through the oil cooler, though I'm sure that it could happen. Last winter I did oil coolers on several late builds but the rush stopped just as suddenly as it started. The motor will stall when the crankcase level falls to about 3.5 quarts.

Re: oil cooler problem?

the problem comes from the oil pressure being greater than the coolant pressure. when you shut the engine down, the coolant is under pressure and will feed into the engine through the cooler leak. if you restart the engine, the antifreeze will be pumped though out the engine. so whether or not the engine will restart or not, dont contaminate it with the anti-freeze.

Re: oil cooler problem?

I love this sight..... I was jumping on here today to ask somewhat the same question. I had what was I thought was the all talked about 6.0 oil leak. took it to the dealer and after a couple of days they traced it to the oil cooler. Said it was leaking for they replaced the cooler.
